A friend of mine wanted to sell their laptop and offered it to me. It's a Samsung r540, motherboard model BA92-06785A. They are asking $200, which I thought was more than fair. I won't be doing all that much on it, mostly office stuff or browsing the Internet. I may want to do some things with Photoshop or InDesign, possibly some free gaming like UrbanTerror or America's Army. I was looking into upgrade options, well because that's what we do around here. Always looking for something to be bigger, stronger, faster, and just overall better. I don't really know my way around laptop hardware all that well and was just wondering a few things.

Is this a good buy?

Should I upgrade it if I do purchase it?

Upgrade options:

Core i3 370m (installed) or Core i5 520m ($100-$150 used): Yes or No?

4GB DDR3 (installed) or 8GB DDR3 ($30-$40 new): Yes or No?

500GB hard drive (Installed) or 240GB SSD($209.99): Yes or No?

Also, I included a picture of the motherboard and was wondering what are the items circled?

So when said and done about $600-$700 on this? I'd go for a new laptop or put the money toward a desktop.

Yes, if I did all the upgrades mentioned above, it would be around $600-$700 dollars. I am looking for a laptop to complement my desktop, something portable, my desktop is still a work in progress of course. I was just wondering what advice was out there for purchasing or upgrading if I did. If the upgrades would make much of a difference or it would be a waste? Would this laptop do all the little stuff I asked of it? What those circled things are?

I would just buy new tech. Sandybridge CPU platforms would be the same price if not cheaper right now (since ivy bridge is now out) and perform better as well.

The top left hand thing is a wireless card and the lower right hand side is a card reader.

I could find that for $200 right now or is that in the $600-$700 range?

You could get it for 450ish (+ tax) right now.

That would be with an 2nd gen i5.

You are getting the laptop and not just the motherboard, right? Upgrading the RAM to 8GB and from HDD to SSD is good. However, you can find better SSDs at lower prices. I've seen both the Crucial m4 and Samsung 830 256GB dip down to $150~160 while the Intel 330 240GB, I've seen as low as $140. Black Friday's coming up so we might see some even better deals.

The CPU upgrade is a definite waste of money. You'd be better off buying a brand new laptop with better specs.

If the laptop you're buying is the one that's been taken apart in the above picture, I think I'd be wary of buying it particularly with Black Friday deals coming upon us. There should be plenty of $300~500 deals on brand new laptops with 2nd or 3rd gen Core i3/i5. From this review, it's not like build quality is good either. The specs I'm seeing on the Samsung are fairly mediocre so why settle for used mediocre when you can get new mediocre for around the same price?

The one I would be purchasing is fully intact and never taken apart. Thank you all for your responses. The picture is just one I used for reference to figure out what kind of hardware was in it. I was just looking for something relatively cheap to do what I needed. Waiting for black Friday may be the better choice at this point.
