Memory is certainly sold in single sticks and many people on a budget buy one now and one later.
Not long ago during a sale single sticks were selling for less than half the matched pair price, they sold out rapidly. By twos.

i do see some generic kingston single 4GB ddr3 sticks but it would look odd paired with a g-skill ripjaws-x with a red heatsink. im a bit worried a might encounter some stability issues as well.

got my second stick. although the heatsink on the second one was slightly longer on the bottom part which I found really weird. here are single channel vs. dual channel maxxmem runs







my i3 2120 absolutely destroyed my phenom II x4 in games and benchmarks. it runs cool too and hardly consumes any power. im really happy and I didn't even spend a single cent. it did take a bit of effort though but it was worth it.. would've preferred an i5 2400 if it was available but ima try to get one if I find a good deal again

I would not mix two different brands of memory.
Two sticks of identical G'Skill RipjawsX should be fine. Different brands with likely different chips and design, no.
The preference is same "batch" chips, so characteristics are as close as possible.
Usually you can "replace" a failed memory card with an identical one.
Mixing two labels where memory chips are likely to have different sources and card configuration, no.

I have never mentioned I used different brand of memory. they're both g-skil ripjaws x with the same specs. the heatsink was slightly longer on the new one. something not worth mentioning tbh just my OCD kicking in
