screen tearing below the refresh rate?

hey guys,

i have stock gtx 670 ftw SLI and i get screen tearing in crysis 1 even though it is below the refresh rate. on scenes that i am at 40-50fps, i get tearing for some reason.

i have everything maxed and AA at 4x. i have a 1440p monitor. it only occurs in this game. every other game including bf3 it doesn't happen. i even have adaptive vsync on.

is it possible what i am seeing is not tearing? what can this phenomenon be?

It could be a possible issue with the game's coding or Nvidia drivers. Have you tried just running the game with a single graphics card?

I see screen tearing at any framerate that is not vsynced and locked to my refresh rate.

Run with triple buffering on a Vsync. Give that a try. Adaptive Vsync will create screen taring too

okay i'll try that when i get home. thanks. also forcing vsync globally in nvidia is the same as just turning it on within a game correct? (sorry i am a noob at this) i'm sure there are no differences

The only way to completely eliminate screen tearing is to enable VSync, it is still possible to see screen tearing if the framerate is not locked to your refresh rate, even if the FPS is below your refresh rate.

With that being said, you typically will see more tearing with a framerate that is above your refresh rate.

isn't adaptive vsync supposed to do that? or will triple buffer + vsync be better?

its not that bad, i guess my eyes are just hyper sensitive to it and i may be nit picking a little.

Triple buffer + Vsync will give you less tearing, but there are drawbacks... Triple Buffering uses more memory, may increase mouse lag and/or may be unsupported in some games.

Adaptive VSync helps to limit tearing, but it doesn't completely eliminate it. Only true VSync will.
