Temps seem high on my 3930k

Before I say anything, I just want to point out that for some reason my 3930k has always run really hot. Using a Hyper 212 Plus on stock settings, 1 hour of folding would bring it up to 80ish degrees. The Cooler Master TPC-812 did an even worse job and my temps would almost reach the 90's. I then ditched the air cooling and bought an H80, and that helped a little bit, but I was still getting high temps at full load (almost 80). I then switched to an H100, and it would usually idle around 40 and full load it would be around 74 degrees on a good, cold day. On a warm day, my chip exceeded 80 degrees while folding.

So then I decided to put a custom loop on this hellraiser. I purchased the following:

XSPC RX360
DD Laing D5 (aka Swiftech MCP-655-B)
Swiftech Apogee HD
3 1500RPM fans (Shark)

I also have a res and tubing of course.

I just fired it up and it seems that my idle temps and my load temps are still rather hot at STOCK settings. My ambient temperature is probably around 21C right now. My coldest core is chilling at 23C and my hottest core around 35C. Almost a 9 degree difference, and I'm thinking they should be lower. Anyway, my full load is low 60's, around 61 or 62, sometimes it dips to 59. This temperature is after 15 minutes of P95 blend.

I'm guessing it could be the CPU block is just not mounted 100%, or maybe my fans are not doing a fantastic job or the thermal grease I used (the stuff that came with the Apogee HD since I can't find my MX-4) could be at fault. In any case, I'm pretty disappointed now. Does anyone else with a 3930k and a custom loop have any pointers they could give me? Perhaps I am applying the thermal grease on incorrectly onto this chip (I have built many, many systems before, but never a 6-core!).

Any help is appreciated smile.gif

Looks about right to me...

and pretty much every chip has that weird 9* core difference

Looks about right to me also, what is your OC? 4.5ghz? The only think I can tell you that will help is to either get some higher static fans or a larger rad like a ex480 but better fans should help you lower temps by 1-3C

Edit: overlooked where you said STOCK settings, I get those same temps with my 3930k on a 480rad in push only < 20-23C ambient> at 4.6ghz with stock voltage. Have you tried to OC it to 4.5 and see what the temps look like then?

Hmm, good to know. Thanks for the input. What are your temps like at full load?

Well my CPU isn't OC'd. These temps are with it running at stock.

I actually have no idea what my stock temps were, lol. I OC'ed from the moment I had it.

Awesome, thanks for the info. Do you mind me asking what you have cooling it right now? Looking at your sig it seems that the monster build is not quite done yet, so what do you have hooked up? Also, is that 4.8GHz I see?

Right now I am using my spare rig, so the sig rig isn't hooked up at all. At the time though when that screenshot was taken I was using:

Rasa CPU Block
RS360 in push pull with the S-flex fans
D5 on 5
AS5 thermal paste

Probably about 22C Ambient

And yeah, 4.8 was the highest stable clock I could get while staying under far enough under 1.4v for me to feel comfortable for a daily clock.
