NEW AMD 7890 based on 7900 series - Page 3

Funny how you're all making assumptions about whether you should upgrade or not, based on a short article about a still non-existing GPU from AMD. Maybe the thing is just to wait and see what they have up their sleeves, before you guys decide whether to get it or not?

since it can't be bought yet, whats your point?

Why make assumptions about the card, price etc? The article doesn't really conclude anything. So like you said, it can't be bought yet. No reason to make assumptions about how it's going to perform.

Logic says it will be faster than the 7870 and slower than the 7950, how that is done is the discussion here...
Price wise I think it will force AMD to lower its prices on the 7870 since its already positioned against the 660GTX.

I see it as beign rather pointles then back in the hd4850 days that was the best part of the 4890 was that it could be added with 4850 later and could cfx.

Can someone explain why this card is "better" than a 7870? It seems to have smaller memory clock and effective memory bandwidth according to that one chart. Core clock is lower. The only thing I see that is different is larger die size (so higher power consumption?) and larger bus width 384 vs 256. Considering the 7870 is down to $200 on some models and 660gtx is right around there, how can they say performance for same price unless it launches at $200? But it sounds like more like they intend a $249 part. Confusing to me but still putting off a 7870 until this launches. I wonder if all the free games will disappear when this hits?

It has more Unified Shaders (kinda like CUDA Cores on Nvidia cards) than the 7870 which would result in the performance increase.

7870 has - 1280 stream processors The 7890 will have 1536
7870 has- 80 Texture units The 7890 will have 96
7870 has 256bit bus width mem The 7890 has 384

the 7890 should be a good bit faster than the 7870. I believe the idea moving forward is the 7890 replaces the 7950 non boost edition cards.

reviews will be on out the 27th.
