$1000: Enough for a TF2 server? - Page 3

Hey there,

Not to put a downer on the whole thing but what is your internet connection? you need pretty decent upload speeds to support 20 people on a tf2 server plus ts plus css.

and is it really worth it?

Considering I have a vps at 6 dollars a month perfectly capable of running tf2 and the next one up was only 14 or so.

I host with corgitech as they were cheapest, they have a 50 percent off code somewhere online.

It just takes all of the hassle out of it and saves u internet issues, download limit issues etc and at the end of it you dont have this old pc that you all bought in for and u have to work out how to split.

For $1000 you can buy and use a pretty damn good server for years without having to configure the os, worry about dropouts or connection issues etc.

We did a very similar thing except we used one of these - http://www.ebuyer.com/281915-hp-proliant-turion-ii-n40l-microserver-100-cashback-658553-421

But the internet connection let us down, its a fun thing to play with but eh, i just wouldnt bother.

try these - there is a 50 percent off one there too - http://domainpromocodes.com/coupons/corgitech/

and if you get the 50 percent off on a lower vps hosting plan, and want to upgrade the 50 percent carries over so u can get a lower one and if it doesnt suit get a better one.

I think that is definitely the way to go

I'm quite sure I've installed win95/2k/xp on a number of computers without any iGPU or dedicated GPU. Slow as hell though, but the processors of today are a whole lot faster than an old pentium thumb.gif

(or, they had a built in gpu in the chipset or something, i wasn't really into hw at that time, so i don't really know anything about them tongue.gif)

Minecraft is the beast here. Any dual core processor with 2GB ram would be enough to power a busy TF2 server.

However depending on mods, active players and what happens on a MC server you'd need to have a lot of memory(16GB is a good idea) and a decent quad core.

Remember TF2 is not multithreaded and Bukkit is not multithreaded, but MC is.

Pick a Xeon with a 5 at the end, this means it has onboard GPU or an AMD processor, it's up to you.

However I'd just use SSH to communicate with the server, it's far easier and more practical. But onboard would make it alot easier to install an OS so you don't have to put in a dedicated card. smile.gif

I'm getting really really confused. So many suggestions .... ummm .... so, should I NOT spend more than 500-600 dollars and just get an AMD build or spend more for an intel? I'm sorry, this is my first time building something like this...

Good point. frown.gif What if I only hosted the TF2 Minecraft and CSS individually with teamspeak? Then have scheduled games? Would an average internet connection be enough?

You aren't looking to put much load on the machine so I'm fairly confident that you'll be alright.

However, I dislike the idea of running a server on a residential connection. Often the bandwidth is insufficient and residential connections don't have the best peering to other residential connections, so pings will be less than spectacular.

I'd opt for something like renting a dedicated server personally. It's not as neat as running it in-house, but performance will be better. You could also consider colocating this machine in a datacenter. You'll own the equipment and get great network performance.

Maybe I should consider that instead. :/

Yes, upload

I just tested it a few times ... looks like the first test (40) was false. Average of 20 mbps ...

Dunno about TF2 but that should be plenty to host a MC server so my guess is it will be plenty for a TF2 server.
