Maybe I should consider that instead. :/

40mbps upload is very nice and probably won't be a problem for you. However, my suggestions still stand. If you were only hosting a minecraft or teamspeak server (where ping isn't terribly important), I'd say go ahead. You're looking to do quite a bit more than that so you'll need some serious network performance/equipment.

I'd suggest gettin a decent dedicated server if you can spare about $100 to $150 a month. It'll run everything you're looking for like a dream. It's a lower initial investment and it'll be about a year before you hit your budget. Keep in mind you can probably receive donations from those benefiting from your server to help mitigate the costs.

Unfortunately the server is going to be private and we haven't really considered making it public. However that's a good point. Since we are 20, we can take turns paying for it. smile.gif

So, what parts would you suggest would be good enough and allow me to spend as little as possible?

I'll consider both options and discuss it with the others. smile.gif

A silent and relatively future proof gaming server for under $1000?

Sorted. thumb.gif

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor ($174.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: ASRock 970 PRO3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($77.55 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair XMS3 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($68.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive ($99.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: MSI Radeon HD 6450 1GB Video Card ($14.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Fractal Design Define R3 Black Pearl ATX Mid Tower Case ($125.30 @ Mwave)
Power Supply: SeaSonic X Series 400W 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($123.98 @ Newegg)
Monitor: LG E1942S-BN 18.5" Monitor ($86.98 @ NCIX US)
Total: $772.77
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Notes:
The $15 GPU is there because the FX series don't have integrated graphics if you didn't already know.

This should also be pretty power efficient and pretty quiet due to the power supply I picked out, and the case should keep in any other noise from fans and hard drives. smile.gif

As i said before, the proliant microserver by hp is about 150 pounds and ran minecraft just fine ( after a ram upgrade for explosms)

Why are we quoting dedicated servers at $100 a month??! jeez do u have gold connections on ur vps tongue.gif corgitech are blocked on this network ( at gfs college) but go on their website, note that there are 50 percent off offer codes still around. Mine is $6 and runs tf2 just fine my friends is still quad core xeon with plenty of ram and bandwith for $24

seriously have a look it works out better in all areas, and when u guys decided u want to move on u just stop paying. and splitting the bill is better and easier, paid monthly etc etc no hardware to split, no issues with your mates.

And what does it hurt to give it a go? you lose a few dollars as there are no lengthy contracts. If it doesnt suit u build ur pc, if it does, then sorted.

on a side note, 20 mb upload would be enough for minecraft, probably enough for a ten player or so tf2 ( look online for exact numbers ) but even so, a vps has 100 mbit internet and good pings... sooo

dedicated vps - the way forward.

Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate the help everyone, I think I'll just go with what anadalite suggested. smile.gif If we split the bill, we'll be spending less than 10 bucks per person.

A vps will stumble over itself if all of these services are utilized at the same time. I have no doubts it would handle a select few of these purposes fine, but for all at the same time under actual load -- go dedicated. A vps does not always offer optimal performance because (regardless of what the host says), resources are shared. I'm a customer of corgi tech myself as well, but a small 512mb VMWare VPS cannot handle all of this at once. If anything, get several of them, each doing a certain set of services and pray they are equally balanced among different nodes to preserve performance.

Assuming this is for you and a few friends, you should be able to keep TF2, CSS, and MC running...but if you have 10 people connected to each at the same time, it will struggle. If this is something you are wanting to share with random people, a VPS is not a good solution to run them all from. I would consider colo, or dedi-servers.

I also think you should build 500-700$ box and colo it somewhere. You just have to shop around for a good data center and pricing.

Who is your Internet provider at home?
