This.

The generic Windows driver does not have to be removed.  Just install the driver that you want to use, reboot, and then you'll be all set.  There is no need to do anything else.

The reason is that I want to install the original drivers from the disk is for testing purposes. I know this isnt the right place, but my graphics card (HD 5870) drivers crash when ever I update them from driver version 8.6 (this comes on the disk with the card)... and now with windows 8, the default drivers are already a few versions above this, 8.97 to be precise, and thus, this causes the drivers to crash when I play games. The only stable version I have found is the one that came on the disk with my card...

Thank you for the offer Image132, but yeah I need to almost downgrade drivers as opposed to upgrade them smile.gif

Both Moodkiller and KalashNK try both these methods in order.

1) Boot into safe mode. Uninstall the driver but when it says "You have to restart to complete the installation" click yes.

Reboot. Before windows auto installs the driver go into device manager and update the device to your driver.

If that doesn't work:

2) Boot into safe mode. Uninstall the driver but when it says "You have to restart to complete the installation" click no.

Install the driver you want to use in safe mode. Reboot.

Baring that, try that program.

I've had to do this for my friends laptop. The drivers for his card were faulty but I kept getting an error when I tried to uninstall it. I had to use option 2 to get the driver to update.

So did either option 1 or option 2 work for you?

Also you can try a windows 7 driver. As far as I know Microsoft tried very hard to make anything that runs on windows 7 to run on windows 8. I personally go the safer route and download windows 8 drivers but the worst that will happen is you get an error installing the driver or the driver installs but is faulty in which case, remove and install proper drivers.

Let me know what happens.

Oh yes, haha sorry about that, forgot to mention that. Unfortunately those steps didnt work, and I was not able to remove the windows 8 default drivers. Couldnt even remove it with Perfect Uninstaller as I could not find and option to remove device drivers...

Quick note on the latest windows 8 drivers from AMD, they dont help fix my problem and still cause the card/drivers to crash during game play... Hence why I want to install the original (windows 7 drivers) from the disk onto my pc as there are the only ones that work (for what ever reason - and Im in the process of finding out why and how to fix it)

This is a very very strange situation. You can't update your driver but you can't uninstall it either from safe mode. You sure device manager can't update your driver to the specific one you choose?

Yes I am sure, because in essence I am trying to "downgrade" my drivers as such. So the current windows 8 default driver is version 8.97 and the ones I want to install from the original disk are version 8.6..

So windows gives me the message saying that the driver is installed and up to date..
