Is my CPU Bottlenecking my GPU?

Thread Starter
Is my cpu (Phenom 2 x4 960T oc'd @4.00ghz ) bottlenecking my gpu (MSI HD7850 Twin Frozr III OC) in most games my gpu only uses about 60-70% most of the time.

I would say normally no the 960T should not bottleneck that card. However it could be that the game your playing does not utilize the card fully (minecraft being a good example). Also make sure you have VSync turned off when checking for graphical bottlenecks.

that's a good pair. getting anything higher than a 7850 you would start to bottleneck, maybe the games you play are very cpu extensive but lightly threaded. with games that are well threaded you'll do just fine

Thanks for the quick reply. I have 1 more question which do you think a game will utilize more a high overclock or unlocking the hidden cores?

Don't get caught up in the BS about bottlenecking. Framerates are all that matters, if they are good, you don't have a problem.

What percentage load your GPU reaches really doesn't matter one bit. And if you did hit 100, that would mean your GPU is bottlenecking your CPU, then you'd have to make a new thread.

If VSync is on, or you have a framerate cap set, your GPU will not hit 100. I cap CS:GO to 128FPS. If I kept the stock 300FPS cap, I'd use more GPU and CPU, generate alot of heat/power needlessly for extra framerates that don't matter for gameplay.

Watch your framerates, not your GPU use.

But frame rates are way too subjective, thats like saying watch your frame rates even if he's using 800x600 resolution, theres a lot more factors, including if he has a GPU or CPU bottleneck.

But to answer the OP, no you shouldn't get a bottleneck with that setup, that overclock is pretty good and gives great performance for the Phenom II and Thuban.

I don't see how it's subjective at all. It's a number you can measure. Say he is at 600x800, and his GPU is %60 and his FPS are 160. I'd say there is no problem in that case.

You have to know minimum framerates or this is all alot of people throwing meaningless BS around.

The way you phrased it at first would mean you would say something like this to him.

According to that, we don't care what resolution, what gpu usage he has, what cpu he has, just so long as we hear what FPS he has. Theres a lot of factors that could tell us if he could IMPROVE his performance or not. This is overclock.net.

This is what we need to know. If your average is 30-40 then your minimums are probably pretty bad. I don't know what a 7850 is capable of, but if it's close to the 6950 I have it should be good for 1080p. I know the BF games are CPU limited, so I'd say it's probably time to move to IB. Any BFBC2 people can comment?
