Looking for advice in CPU bottleneck problem.

Thread Starter
Hello. I'm looking for advice in buying new CPU that could solve bottleneck problem that i have with current build.
My specs are:
Intel Pentium E6500 2.93GHz
Motherboard: ASUS P5QPL-AM
RAM: 3GB DDR2
Graphics card: GeForce Gt 240 512MB DDR5
Supply: Corsair 550W CMPSU-550VXEU

I assume this is CPU problem because i found couple threads where people with this processor were given advice to replace it. Also i checked graphics card performance with MSI Afterburner. Running game made processor work with about 95% load and at the same time graphics card worked at about 30-40% (there were visible FPS drops).
I found couple advices about CPU replacement (like g850) but this processors seems to be not supported by my motherboard. And this is issue because i would like to leave current motherboard. As i understand only supported products are listed here http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5QPLAM/#CPUS .
I should add that my budget is limited buy i hope there will be no need for something very expensive to fix this build. So i would like to ask for advice in selection of new part.

When buying PC i asked for good quality supply so i hope it can stay.

Sorry for my english.

Your best bet would be to scrap everything but the PSU and do a budget build. An i3, cheap mobo, 4gb of ram, and an HD 7770 would go a long way for you. You could get it all for around $350.

what is a realistic budget for you?
if budget isnt big get a decent 775 quad core Q6600 or above, can be found fairly cheap
i dont think cpu is only bottleneck as that gpu isnt to good either

This is what I would do in your situation...
Budget Upgrade (Click to show)
PCPartPicker part list

CPU: Intel Pentium G850 2.9GHz Dual-Core Processor ($69.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: Zotac H61MAT-A-E Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($42.81 @ Amazon)
Memory: GeIL Black Dragon 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory ($32.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7770 1GB Video Card ($115.50 @ NCIX US)
Total: $261.29
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Staying at the 775 socket will be a waste. The CPUs are far to expensive for the performance increase you will be getting. It is much better to switch over to the 1155 socket.

Thank you all for help. Well i was afraid that there will be no hope. I can't really change motherboard because i extensively use serial and parallel port it's just much simpler than trying to find working converters. Same thing with staying on 32 bit system, trying to get programs to work in virtual box (as some of my friends are forced to do) would reflect on my physical health rolleyes.gif .
I think answer i got from you is simple. It's better to just build new PC rather than spend money on new parts. As for budget, i was hoping for less than proposed ~300, but it make much more sense to get more funds than to throw money away.
So again thanks for help! Now i know what i'm standing on.

The HD7770 is going for around $100 which can handle most of the modern games just fine.

for way under $200 it would be like getting a new computer.

there is no bottleneck with your current setup, unless your harddrive is a caviar green 5400rpm which is very slow but you didnt mention what harddrive you had.
The Intel E6500 2.93GHz dualcore is more than fast enough to be paired with a GeForce Gt 240. I would say you can even get good FPS with a GTS 250 or GTS 450.
Any faster card than those and you might experience a bottleneck.

Sell your GT 240 and get a better card for starters. Even the old 9800GT will be a lot better
