[UCS] Android Now Enjoying Lead in Smartphone Market

According to the latest numbers by IDC, the smartphone market is now being led by Android with their 75 percent market share whereas Apple only held 15 percent share in the most recent quarter. In selling terms, this means that Android is outpacing Apple at a rate of five-to-one with their smartphone devices.

I found this interesting article this morning detailing the smartphone market and found it informative without the usual bias found in most articles/blogs lately.

The stats are interesting. Never thought the difference was that large.
Still, the article could've been written a bit better. Tons of short sentences, overused linking words, and redundancy make this seem like a highschooler's essay at times(though at least without any glaring grammar mistakes).
I'd have also liked to see some statistics concerning the smartphone market in the US alone.

Lol it's been "enjoying" a market lead for quite a while, but I get that the article is just celebrating a 75% market share milestone. By the looks of this page http://www.ucstrategies.com/unified-communications-professionals/uc-strategies-experts.aspx, the authors of that site aren't young writers. I was thinking they were young students but I guess not.

It would be reasonable to argue that Apple is in a better position to lead in the PC market rather than the smartphone market due to the fact that its market share is not far behind the current market leaders. IDC reports that the two market leaders, HP and Dell, hold 26 percent and 30.7 percent of the market share, respectively. But when looking at the smartphone market, Apple falls far behind the leader.

This is the only thing I would disagree with due to the context of the article. They are comparing Android to Apple, as in the OS, not the manufacturers. To be a fair comparison, they would have to compare windows to Apple in the computer market.

Other than that, I'd have to agree with what they are saying.

Not really, I'd say the comparison is equal. In the PC market Apple competes with Dell, HP, Sony, etc. (the software provider for those PCs being Microsoft) just as they compete with LG, Samsung, HTC, etc. (the software provider being Google) in the smartphone market. If anything I'd say the comparison couldn't be any better. Apple Lisa computers were pretty much the first home computers with a GUI, weren't they? Just as the iPhone was "pretty much" the first smartphone (aside from Blackberry, I guess many could argue). Both Microsoft and Google have pulled far ahead of Apple in software market share along with their respective hardware manufacturers.

I agree, I was surprised by the stats, I see so many iphones being used in business I would never thought these stats were the case. Also agree, it wasn't the best written, just different than all the tech blog articles lately which are usually biased one way or another.

For the mobile market, they didn't compare Apples market share versus Samsung/Motorola. They compared Apples market share vs Android. That means OS vs OS.

Ok? And in the PC market they're also referring to Mac vs. Windows... I'm not seeing your point. Microsoft doesn't manufacture PCs (aside from the new Surface now) just like Google doesn't manufacture Android phones.

Flase, in the pc market they compare Apple to Dell and HP, not windows as a whole.

That was tossed in as an extra statistic, just pointing out the two top sellers in the PC market. The article still referred to Mac vs the entire Windows PC market as a whole, stating that Apple only holds ~12% of that market. If the author threw in "IDC reports that the two market leaders, Samsung and HTC , hold X percent and Y percent of the smartphone market share, respectively," that doesn't suddenly mean the author was comparing Apple to Samsung and HTC, does it? He is still comparing iOS to Android, but just threw in that extra fact of how much of the market the top two manufacturers hold.
Quote:
The 15 percent share that Apple holds in smartphones is just a slight improvement on the 12.5 percent they hold in the U.S. PC market, according to IDC.
Quote:
IDC reports that the two market leaders, HP and Dell, hold 26 percent and 30.7 percent of the market share, respectively.

That's only 56.7% of the market, where Apple only holds 12.5% of the market. That leaves 30.8% for all other Windows PCs.
