[UCS] Android Now Enjoying Lead in Smartphone Market - Page 2

And yet media and everyone keep craming iCrap down our throats. It's not a smartphone, its an iPhone to them... It really irks me when they refer to all smartphones as iPhones. It might have made sense like saying Google for search, for a year or so... but why now? They are one of many competitors in the market, with sales showing nothing special about them now that they can't artificially own the market.

This just shows what happens to Apple when they have to actually compete, and really explains why they have been so aggressive with mobile lawsuits as of late. Look at their shrinking market share, and where the majority of their profits come from, and its easy to see why Apple needs to be so aggressive from a business standpoint. They are literally a couple of flopped devices from going from #1 to almost out of the game... Apple is in a tough position to hold on to their image of being the device... Competition could literally kill Apple. (unlikely, but possible, when you look at things...)

That's only 56.7% of the market, where Apple only holds 12.5% of the market. That leaves 30.8% for all other manufacturers.

I see your still missing the point. No worries, its really not even important enough to argue.

I have no personal opinion either way. I have a MBP, and a Galaxy Nexus. biggrin.gif

Android has held a greater marketshare than Apple for a LONG time now. That lead has just grown to 75% now which has to be crushing them.

I didn't mean to argue, I just truly don't see the point you're making. Let me take it back to your original post:

This is the only thing I would disagree with due to the context of the article. They are comparing Android to Apple, as in the OS, not the manufacturers. To be a fair comparison, they would have to compare windows to Apple in the computer market.

Other than that, I'd have to agree with what they are saying.

Response to the bolded part: They are comparing Apple computers to Windows computers; that's what they're referring to. What else would they be referring to? I guess it's POSSIBLE that Chrome OS PCs are in that comparison, but that's a laughable statistic at the moment. All the article means is Apple holds 15% of the smartphone market, which is pretty close to their low 12.5% market share in the computer market. The mention of Dell and HP is just an extra statistical fact thrown in to show how Apple fares against the top 2 PC sellers.

But don't they make like 70% of the profits in the smartphone industry when you combine iPhone and Appstore purchases anyway ? Marketshare isn't all that relevant, profits are.

When you have all your profits tied to one or two devices, marketshare is much more important, long-term. All it will take is ONE mediocre to bad product release, and that company is going to beach itself like a fruity whale.

The two go hand in hand. How profitable would Apple be if they had 50% or more market share in the smartphone market, while keeping their current profit margins per unit sale? Market share is definitely important, especially when you have a limited line of products. (iPhone, iPad, iPod as far as iOS goes). If they don't try to fight to regain market share, they're only going to continue losing it, eventually narrowing their profits to very low figures in that market. Google has very low profit per actual Android unit sold (it would be 0 but I'm sure they take a cut out of Nexus device sales now), but the market share directly affects their advertising revenue, so they purely rely on high market share. Apple makes upwards of $400 profit per iPhone sold I believe. So if Google makes as little as $20 profit per Nexus phone sold, Apple can sell 1 iPhone and match what Google profits from 20 Nexus phones. Therefor with Google having 5x the market share, Apple still does earn a LOT more profit per actual unit sale; but Google makes a hefty stack of billions in ad revenue from having such a huge market..

If Android has 75% of the market, and 28% of Android users are using ICS/JB that means there are twice as many people using the latest version of Android(or close enough, since there's little outward difference between 4.0/4.1/4.2) than there are using iOS 6.
