This: Apple has not been releasing good quality phones recently. Proof is all those reports from Foxxcon saying they can't keep up with Apple's demand for quality.

Selling phones at price points that appeal to a wider audience is not a bad thing. Even Mercedes (since you mentioned them) does this with their cars. Look at the price difference between a base C class and the S. $35k is pretty cheap for a Mercedes when you can spend that on a fully loaded Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.
