[Appleinsider] Future Apple iPhones, iPads may have internal fans

It is unclear if Apple plans to use the invention in an upcoming iDevice, but it seems doubtful that such additional components can reasonably fit within the iPhone, which becomes increasingly thin with each design evolution.

The iPad would be better suited for such a system, as consumers have complained of high temperatures generated when operating the device for extended periods of time, or running CPU-intensive apps. With the new fourth-generation iPad's switch to the Lightning connector, there is extra space within the aluminum chassis for the platform, however Apple has previously boasted that the tablet's design does not need noisy cooling fans.

Source

I , for one, am skeptical of this. I'm certain it will never appear in an iPhone as pocket lint and dust would clog any intake almost immediately. Is this just another "we patented it" move on Apple's part knowing they'll never use this in a practical application?

lol yeah right.... seeing as how battery life is more important than a warm phone in your hands this will never happen.

I don't know how you would integrate a fan without using tremendous battery life

I could see small covered "vents" that have a fan thing attached at one side of the device, add a few cm's and a little fan. The vents open only when fan attachment is on, suck the heat out. If done right and small and nice looking, it would make a nice "high end" accessory for these devices. As well as allow current thermal envelopes to be passed for "professional" apps or something like that which would cause a lot of extra heat...

I dunno, its the only way I could see this working, as an external attachment... As others have said. Simply having a fixed internal fan would need air vents that would easily get clogged. Making the device rely on such things would cause a lot of failures after they get clogged and overheat. Having to replace said devices would cost too much money. I'm curious how they will manage this, if they do anything at all with it.

Though Apple could do it, have it get clogged and die, and they would simply say your using it wrong. Everyone would be ok wiping dirt off filtered vents every time you took it out of your pocket, and praise Apple for such a genius innovation rolleyes.gif Who knows...

Plus, the fan would only need to operate when temps get REALLY hot... and stay on only till the temps drop a little again, or the device is put to standby or something...

Interesting. If Apple finds a way to implement this technology without a large penalty to battery life and with reasonable reliability (i.e. no getting clogged after 2 weeks) then I say more power to them. thumb.gif

Not a fan of this idea.

On a more serious note, seems... irrational imo. Yes a fan would work, but that in of itself seems like it would clash with the aesthetic of the typical iDevice. Not to mention it's just one more thing to possibly break within a device(s) that are generally a pain to disassemble. Maintenance costs would probably be absurdly high, not to mention that Apple themselves probably wouldn't want to deal with the constant repairs which could taint the name.

Just doesn't make sense :\
