Just bought a new 3TB Seagate HDD and slapped a fresh install of Windows 8 on it. To find that only 2TB is showing and that 746GB is unallocated.

Can someone explain why this is and how I can fix it.

Go to Disk Management and check whether or not you can extend the primary partition, if not you may have to format and create a new partition.

Hit start button and type in 'Disk', then click on the create and format disk partitions.

EDIT:

As for why it happened, it's likely that when installing the OS you created a partition that was smaller than the capacity of the entire drive.

In Windows Disk Management, does the partition show as 2TB? Can you extend it?
You may need to reformat it as GPT (GUID Partition Table) rather than MBR (Master Boot Record), MBR is common and only supports 2.2TB

I tried to extend but i get a message saying

You need to reformat to GPT then, unfortunately. MBR is the problem here.
