Removing a PCIe video card after boot?

Hello,

I'm wanting to turn my old x58/i7 920 system into a headless, diskless linux folding machine. I have everything I need except for a video card to configure it. I can use my main video card to configure it, but I need it back afterwards. Being diskless (unless someone knows how to remove a laptop hdd password) I can't shut it down to pull the card out.

Is there a way to disable and power down the video card so I can remove it? PCIe supports hotplug but I don't want to just yank the card out and see if it survives.

What you really want to do is use a Linux Server install that only uses the terminal, install openssh-server, then you can use a SSH client like Putty from any machine on the network to access the machine. Using this method, you only need to have the video card in for the initial setup, then you just pwoer down, take out the card, power back up and manage it completely remotely.

There are automated installers that would eliminate the need for a video car completely and these just require configuring a config file for the isntaller to use to set up the server.

Thank you for your input. This would be on a system with no hard drive, and I need to connect it to the network wirelessly, so remote management will be difficult without local setup.

If I borrow a hard drive for the cause, can I configure ubuntu to stage the configured hard drive image in RAM and then unplug the hard drive?

No, that would not be possible. Just buy a cheap 8 GB USB flash drive and plug that in and install on to that. that's what a lot of dedicated folding rigs do to save on cost.

As for remote management, it will work fine over wireless. I manage my server across the country using my cell phone with an SSH client. Because it's just a command-line interface, it uses next to no bandwidth.

So essentially you run the installer for a headless install (this means a distro of linux that doesnt rely on a GUI), install openssh-server, make sure it is open to remote connections, then you're good to go. If yuo need remote management outside of the network, you will have to make sure you set a strong password on the install and forward port 22 from that machine through your router. I recommend using a different external port for safety reasons though. for example, I forward port 22 from my server (IP 10.0.1.104) to port 31123 (Just make sure it doesn't interfere with anything else) so when I want to access my server, I use my external IP address and port 31123.
