Someone can correct me if I'm wrong here but I think, with Boinc, you can have them un-linked and then each card would run at it's own speed and I don't think one would be limited by the other.
How are the noise levels at load with that XFX card? I was looking at that a week ago as it seemed a steal for £220!

At load it does get loud, but its not much louder than my old MSI 550TI

one 7970 has 2048 cores, 2x 7950 = 3584

Easy win !

Doc's right on the $$$ re: crossfire. With BOINC, you can unlink the cards and each card can have its speed independently adjusted.

Thanks for the correction! I didn't realize that you could do that with AB. Does that only work well with Boinc or does it work fine when running games too?

I'd be tempted to stay away from Coolermaster PSU's.... They're generally quite bad.
I'd suggest a Seasonic, Corsair or Silverstone's range.

works with both i always kept my 5970@890/1200 and my 5870@949/1200 or 1000mhz/1300mhz ran games good but alot of heat from those cards thats the main reason i love my 7970 so much powerful and not alot of heat. You can even use ccc to overclock cards separtely in crossfire just pick each card with the drop down box.

Very useful info thanks. Just out of curiosity as I've never crossfired two cards of different speeds - when you initially plug them in and hook them up, is one card downclocked to match the other? and do you then just clock it back up using he method you described?

Be default they're usually at different speeds yes, and the tickbox isn't selected. At least it wasn't for my with my 6870 + 6850.
You're better to run them at the same speed personally, as I got a lot less microstutter in games and less screen tearing. Though 2x 68xx's screen tearing can't really get much worse.

I'd suggest to run them at the same clocks, even if that does mean downclocking one card. You get much better overall visual performance.

differt clocks and i didnt really have any micro stutter with my setup like the other guy but like most know crossfire does not always work well in games so thats why i like my single powerful gpu.
