Problem with Asus HD7950 cooling

Hello.

I'm not one to spend so much cash on a graphics card (£100 is usually my limit at low/mid-range) but I thought I'd spend a bit more this time on grabbing a more powerful card and wow it's very powerful comparing to previous cards.

My issue now is that the card is VERY VERY hot (No overclock at all, at 900/1275 default I think), my control center reports the card at 40-50 degrees when running unigine benchmark but when I touch the top of the card it feels more like 90-100 degrees and due to crashing sometimes, there must be something wrong with the cooler.

When the card is really hot, I just gently touch the heatsink and it's stone cold pretty much. I don't know much about graphics card cooling but surely the heatsink should be the one getting hot and the fans blowing the heat away from it?

Is this a bad card? Cooling not working as intended? I've read up about the Asus DirectCUII fault on these cards and wondered if there was a way to fix it? Otherwise I'll send it back.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Use MSI Afterburner and see what it reports for heat. And while you're at it create a fan profile to ramp up the fan speed as the card gets hotter. Make sure that the fan is also spinning.

But, early indication, since the heatsink/rad is not hot, that it may not be secured properly to the card.

MSI Afterburner reports the card at 25c while on desktop with nothing loaded and I've just setup the profile so that the fan gets faster while heating up.

While running Furmark, it reports that it goes up to about 50c but just be touching the graphics card you can tell it's more like 80c+ and the fact that the heatsink/rad is still ice cold is a bit worrying.

The card actually drags down in my case because it's three slots and huge, is it worth screwing on the heatsink so it's closer to the GPU or just sending it back and getting a different version?

Seems fine to me, the back of the card will feel hot to touch. My Asus Matrix 7970 Platinum was faulty and idle it was at 50 degrees and furmark it was at about 95-100 degrees tongue.gif The only thing that concerns me is the crashing.

...the crashing and cool fins don't make sense. I'd start the process of RMA, they might ask you to do some trouble shooting, if it keeps crashing, then they will approve the RMA. Best be safe than sorry.

Going to return it to the place I purchased it, won't deal with DirectCUII ever again! Underclocked it to reference speeds and still crash. frown.gif
