[TH] Radeon HD 7990 And GeForce GTX 690: Bring Out The Big Guns

EVGA recently lent our German lab one of the GeForce GTX 690s we've had in the U.S. for months. The purpose? To pit against HIS' upcoming 7970 X2 and PowerColor's Devil13 HD7990, both dual-Tahiti boards vying to become the world's fastest graphics card.

The biggest news IMHO is how Radeon Pro eliminates microstutter with just one setting! BIG news for multi-GPU configurations! thumb.gif

If I wasn't paying an electric bill, and didn't mind the triple slot, I'd like the 7970 X2 more. I laugh when they reference noise though. People dropping that much on a card can afford water. Why do they fail to mention that everytime?

The micro-stuttering bit was nice to read.

Will this no-microstuttering feature be included in all of AMD's future products?

Is it software based or hardware based? Sorry, didn't fully read the entire article.

No blocks are made for the 7970x2 cards though as they are one-off PCB's.

any form of V Sync is terrible so I don't think this is a good solution

the solution is just single powerful cards

There is a freeware, RadeonPro that let you create profiles for every game to lower or literally remove micro-stutter. 7990 had better average framerate than the GTX690 hence better results with the RadeonPro software. Otherwise, out of the box, GTX690 is much better in term of stuttering.

Even though we like AMD's performance numbers post-Catalyst 12.11, we don't really like how the company got there. It might have taken the crown with its brute force, power-hungry approach, but we would have preferred a little finesse.

Really. If your buying a 1000 dollar card do you care about power bills. The fastest is the fastest.
