[TH] Radeon HD 7990 And GeForce GTX 690: Bring Out The Big Guns - Page 4

Neither of these cards (both of the AMD ones and the nVidia one) are for the general consumer, at all..... When I mention the 690 to my "backyard" customers "yeah I am that unknown, I don't have a site yet. But I am working on it" they say more often than not "stuff that I can buy a whole PC for the price of that Graphics Card"..................

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Kinda wish I knew how to read those microstutter graphs and that they had shown the 690 clocked at the same speed as both cards and the stock speeds but you can never have a perfect review that hits everyones interests.

Basically summarized as follows:

If you want to play without Vsync, than GTX 690 has a large advantage due to significantly less microstutter. If you want to play with Vsync, then 7970 x2 has the advantage due to better raw performance.

Blah Blah Blah microstutter! Can someone please post a video of this mythical microstutter? I've run dual, tri and quad SLI and never experienced it.

I do have a question to the anomoly I noticed where the 7990 doing better at 2560x1440 and then the gap closing at higher resolution of 5760x1080 same settings where you'd think at that resolution the 690 with less VRAM would do worse?
Example: Crysis 2 DX11
2560x1080 5.9 FPS difference.

5760x1080 5 FPS difference
85.2/79.3 = 1.07
46.6/41.6 = 1.12

The gap in framerate might be closer at eyefinity, but the relative difference is slightly higher wink.gif

Wast of money when you spend 1K in a GPU? Silence and over-clocking is everything.

A lot of people that spend a lot of money on computers don't know how to overclock them. I have a fairly wealthy friend and he'll usually buy them pre-made, and if he upgrades a GPU he's just going to swap it out with whatever is in there, he wouldn't even know where to begin with watercooling and even if I offered to do it for him he doesn't care about the extra 10-15% fps he'd get, he just wants to play his game so it's easy for him to just drop a lot of money and be done with it. Of course, a lot of high-end machines nowadays come with water-cooling built in, so he may have one now.

Shows that AMD lose in...
-Frostbite 2 Multi-gpu (Nvidia SLI superior)
-Power Consumption
-Noise
-MultiGPU Micro stutter (Radeon-Pro is no excuse since you have to analyze the game, then create FPS profiles for every single game -.-)
-Driver support
-GPU Core clocks high even on idling and unoptimized blu-ray and firefox spikes.

Even after 12.11

Yes AMD have some nice numbers, but Nvidia have matching numbers with all the better features, support and efficiency perks.
I almost sold my 690 to get 2x 7970ghz edition cards.... phewwwww lucky i dint go through baaasmiley.gif

In the end of the day when you buy something like a GTX690 performance > then all end of distinction. People buy Nissan GTR for comfort and fuel economy.

I dont understand the power consumption thing. Like that you gonna run your card full load like 24/7. Bigger chip bigger consumption.I have 3 7970's 1 with my 965 and 2 with my 3820 setup. I never experienced any micro-stutter. Some people is more sensitive to this so its just a personal thing.Driver support is fine. Dunno what you talk about. Firefox spikes?Disable hardware accelaration you dont need it. Gtx 690 is a good card but dont have a biased opinion. I would be happy with both cards but dont lie ourselves.

i really fancy the 7970... dont get me wrong, but id still prefer the refined craftsmanship of Nvidia
