Only "detecting half of the ram

Thread Starter
I've been using 16gb of ram on my computer ever since I built it, but a couple of days ago, I noticed that windows only had detected 8gb when I opened the task manager. Not worrying too much, I simply shut down my computer, and re-inserted all of my sticks. Booted up, and entered the bios, where I found myself a little confused. Even after re-inserting all the sticks, the bios only detected 8gb. Spent the rest of the day and two more running each stick individually through an extended runthrough of Windows Memorydiagnostics. They were all completely fine. So I decided to test the the memory-slots themselves. Through the method of elimination, I found that they were also fine.

After flashing the bios TWICE, I still had not found the solution. In desperation, I even changed the power-supply and some other components with another computer. Still nothing.

But here's the real weird thing. The motherboard DOES detect all of the sticks, in the SPD-menu, but under the "Main" tab in the bios, only a total of 8gb is showing up. As I said earlier, I've had 16gb installed and utilized it for more than a year now. Will add a video later on which will give you a better picture of it all.

Is there anyone out there who has any idea what is going on? The pc I'm talking about is the one in my sig.

i had a similar problem on my asus m5a97, memok button fixed it. Give that a try, if it doesnt work, run MEMTEST86 on all sticks individually, ill bet you'll find a dud. Either that or your Memory Controller is having problems, not sure how that works on z68 chipset.

Already tried memok a couple of times thumb.gif Haven't used mem86 though, will give it a try. Is it more thorough than WinMD?

Btw, here's the vid.

ahh, screw the bb-codes, seems to be different on every site I visit tongue.gif

Have you confirmed in MSCONFIG whether the RAM is limited? Maximum Memory checkbox should NOT be checked.

vid is fixed. Have you tried running it at stock speed and timings? looks like its ddr1600, and its only running at 1333. Try enabling XMP profile in bios, get it up to speed, if that doesnt work, run memtest86 on em all. BTW, was this a 4 stick kit, or 2 -2 stick kits purchased separately?

EDIT: Memtest link: http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

Have been running them at stock aswell. It's two kits, with different timings (8 and 9), but I've never had any problems with them. I just manually set the timing to 9. Both are veangeace-kits at 1600. Running mem86 as we speak (1 stick), but will probably have to wait until tomorrow before I can test the rest of the sticks.

Sometimes some boards/ chips won't play well with 2 different kits. I've never had this happen to me, but i know it happens.
EDIT: I have had a bad vengeance kit, corsair made good on their warranty though wink.gif
