I love space, it never ceases to amaze me, ever.

there is another one I remember not long ago bigger than earth in the zone but 44ish light years out.

current tech we wont get there so 1-5 light year difference is sort of meaningless. Cant wait for actual Pictures and not artist renditions

Well if it is able to form in the same conditions, it is bound to have similiaritys, like being able to breath, having lungs and a circulation system of some design. Eyes to see or a comparable organ that provides sight.
Though a alien could have strange abilitys, like how we are all physical. We see, smell, taste, hear, and feel. But what if they had another sense.

could be like that movie Evolution, where the creatures were not carbon based life forms

Oxygen is mostly needed to burn sugar and produce energy for us. If you don't have oxygen, you can't live. Period.

You're assuming alien life burns sugar and has the same bodily processes that humans do. Hell look at plants. Plants are a alien life form compared to animals that we see everyday.

I love what they say, a mere 42 lights years haha.

Its only mere when you have the technology to get their. We can forget about getting their, earth and humans will no doubt be gone by then considering the way things are going down here.

I wonder how long it would take to travel there accelerating at 1g half way and then decelerating at 1g for half.

And the planet is a super earth right? I wonder what its gravity is, and what life would look like at 2 gravity's, or 3 (or more). I wonder what the limits are for gravity before life can no longer exist. Man, it sucks that we'll never know these things because we'll all be dead long before our species is spacefaring. I was born during the wrong time :/

Yea it would be pretty cool if there was life on this planet. On the other hand, there's probably no way we could ever move there, considering the average adult male would weigh around 1000 pounds there. Good luck breathing all that supposed oxygen when your chest is too heavy for your lungs to even lift it while laying down.

Gravity is dependent upon mass, not size. So if this planet's density was much less than Earth's it could be much larger and still have close to normal gravity. For human life, at an average eight of 150lb., 2g's would = 300lb. etc... so at about 5g's a normal human would weigh 700lbs. That would be extremely hard to live under and severely reduce the life of the human. I would say the max for an adult human is 6g's at 900lb. But remember this would also affect babies at birth, so it would be much less because their bodies are much weaker. Also note that an alien life form might be much less dense or smaller which would result in less body mass, therefore less weight and higher livable g forces.

As for your first question.... physics math time! wheee.gif
Quote:

v = final velocity, u = initial velocity, a = acceleration, d = distance, t = time.

v^2 – u^2 = 2ad v^2 = 2ad + u^2 v = sqrt((2 * a * d) + (u^2))

u = 0m/s
a = 1g = 9.80665m/s/s
d = 21 light-years = 1.98671097 × 10^17m

v = sqrt((2 * a * d) + (0^2)) = sqrt(2 * a * d) = ~1,973,979,693m/s final velocity.

So accelerating at a constant 1g for half the distance (21 light years) you would be going 1.9billion m/s at the end, which is 6.5x the speed of light. So this scenario isn't possible under current scientific conditions.

But let's say that is was:

t = (v - u) / a

v = 1,973,979,693m/s
u = 0m/s
a = 1g = 9.80665m/s/s

t = 201,289,909s = 6.38 years

So accelerating at a constant 1g for 21 light-years would take you roughly 6.38 years.
To go the full distance (42 light-years) just double the time; 12.76 years.

So your answer is 12.76 years if you could travel FTL (in-fact you would need about 6.5 FTL or 6.5x the speed of light).

Rocket boosters. Grapple your jeep to a NASA shuttle.
