Spare SSD - Cache drive?

Thread Starter
Hello guys,

Since I've got a spare 128gb Agility 3 drive laying around, I was wondering...
Would it make sense to use it as a cache drive for my mechanical hdd? I've read about people doing this, but I have no idea of what exactly it entails, or how I would go about setting it up. So, would it be worth doing, or should I just try and find a new home for it?
If you already have windows on an SSD, there is no point in using a cache drive on a 120gb SSD. I would rather go with RAID 0 and the new Intel RST or use the 2nd SSD for games heavily used apps.

I would personally use it as an additional software drive (games, programs etc.)

I agree with what the two guys above me said. ^ Useing the SSD as a cache I feel is a terrible idea. RAID it if your feeling adventurous. And/or use it for games.

Well, an ssd for 120gb with virtual memory would technically allow you to run almost whatever you want without thinking about any "ram" limits tongue.gif

But i would put the ssd in raid, or dedicate it for usefull programs and maby some games.

A SSD is way way way way way way way way wayyyyyyyyy slower than RAM. Correct me if i am wrong, but RAM can transfer at up to 20GB/s, where a SSD is about 0.5 GB/s. RAM is still 50 times faster than any SSD. Correct?

Virtual memory was a way to improve performance 10 something years ago, but today it's something we keep around for backwards compatibility reasons.

SSD cache mode is only useful if you're on a budget and have a small sized SSD (think 64GB or lower). 128GB SSD is enough to handle your OS and a handful of games you play frequently.

And just to echo what others have said, it's probably in your best interest to either use it as a spare drive for whatever games, software/programs you may have. I probably would use it for games/applications. I personally use HDD for storage (videos, photos, music).
