Is my SSD dying?

Thread Starter
The last 3 days my computer has had lots of lock ups - I can still move the mouse but nothing else happens. Then when I reboot the computer, the SSD doesn't appear in BIOS, nor does the OS load. If I unplug the power and data cable and re-plug them he works for about hour or two before entering the same routine.

Obvious sign of incoming death? Reinstalling OS shouldn't helps since it doesn't even appear in BIOS, right?

Nope - nothing.

But if I reboot the computer while its working it appears in the POST/BIOS and starts normally.

When the drive fails (or the computer locks up), I turn the computer off and the drive does not appear unless I disconnect both cables and plug them back in.

Could it be the cables? Sometimes it's something stupidly simple, and the fact that it works sporadically suggest something like this.. Can you test different sata and power cables?

I also suggest a motherboard bios update, reset of settings, and if these fail a windows reinstall. Could also try reinstalling the SSD bios here

If that fails, then you need to consider hardware failure somewhere in your system.

yeah good point. i thought it was too obvious to mention but whatever.

the sata cable might be dead hence causing the SSD to get picked up sometimes and dropping out other times

Try SSD Life or CrystalDiskInfo and see what the health status says.

So I believe I figured out what was the problem - the firmware.

I had all the reasons do doubt the cable since it should either work perfectly or not at all. But, if the firmware update wouldn't have fixed it (so far) I would have switched the cable. The motherboard had the latest update.

The computer has been working now for 12 hours without a single lock up, which is some kind of record since it would barely play a single episode before the firmware update.
