Router Issues.

Thread Starter

I have hughesnet as my ISP and one of there Router and Modem combo (HN9000).

Here is my problem:

The HN9000 only has one ethernet port so i have to use another router to split off the connection.

Here recently the connection to the HN9000 has stopped working, "DNS Server Stopped Responding" is the windows troubleshooting response.

Doing a "IPConfig /release" and "IPConfig /renew" fixes the problem for about 5 minutes at most.

So in my eyes it has to be a conflict between the two routers, Keep in mind i can configure nothing on the HN9000.

Here is my Question:

Would a network Switch be a solution for my problem?

I am willing to bet the problem is because DHCP is being broadcasted off your personal router. Turn off DHCP and you should be set. It is probably broadcasting the incorrect DNS Server. You can leave DHCP on but you have to properly configure it with the right gateway (your ISP router's IP), DNS, and IP Address Range that doesn't overlap the DHCP range of your ISP's router.

That Seems to have fixed the issues for now, I will report back in a bit.

Edit: Didn't fix the issue.

If the DNS server is not responding, wouldn't that mean there is a problem with the ISP's DNS? When you say you can't configure anything on the HN9000, you mean you are unable to log in to the router firmware?

If you are using an internal router, remove the ethernet from the WAN port and put it in a LAN port with DHCP turned off on the router.

That effectively would turn the router into purely a switch.

1) No, A straight connection to the HN9000 fixes all issues.
2) The HN9000 has basically no client side configuration options.

BRB, Let me try that That Guy.

Edit: Will provide feedback in a minute on whether or not that fixed it.

Edit 2: That seems to have fixed it. +Rep to everyone.

Are you wanting to use the Netgear as an Access Point, or just use it for the LAN ports?

edit:
or both?
