I second Rocks. They make it almost too easy to setup a single node or hundreds of nodes...

I have used their software for many of my customers clusters for initial testing and in some cases final images.

EDIT: The rocksclusters use CentOS 5.8 or 6.2 on the current stable releases.

BTW: Did I mention it was really easy to use rocks in a cluster?

Ubuntu server actually isn't that bad tongue.gif

And yes, I usually am an Ubuntu hater, but give credit where credit is due.

@Shrak

Indeed. I have an Ubuntu 12.04 server running in a VM in 256MB of RAM and 8GB of disk (the latter because it's the default in VirtualBox). It's ticking along nicely. Debian could probably boot in less RAM, but in an HPC cluster who would notice?

No one is saying it's better, just not as bad as you want to make it out to be.

never said it was bad. just completely totally pointless considering the better alternatives.

as I have said many times: even if someone wouldn't notice, why use more ram to do the exact same thing??

Better is subjective on the user and needs. He has been presented with options, why turn this into a thread for you to rant on your hate for Ubuntu.

Maybe you should try it out some time, might make you change your views as it really doesn't use much ram at all, especially in the grand scheme of things. My three home servers ( not including my routers ) run Arch, RHEL, and Ubuntu Server, and the one that uses the most resources is Red Hat, the Arch and Ubuntu servers run roughly the same +- ~30MB of ram depending on what each is doing.

It really isn't important at that point, not when each is rocking 32-64GB of ram.

I may give it a shot. ATM, however, I am completely unconvinced nor expect to be based on what I've read.
