[Slate] EU Plans Groundbreaking Project To Monitor Internet Censorship Around the World

Keeping track of the avalanche of reports about new mass surveillance initiatives and Internet freedom crackdowns can be a difficult task. But soon there could be a solution to the problem: a global monitoring system that will help chart digital repression by mapping the Internet’s "cyber geography" in near real time.
Quote:
ECSA will attempt to pull together, aggregate, and visualize up-to-date intelligence about the state of the Internet across the world. It will show content filtering, blocking, or other disruptions to the Web, among other things. ECSA could prove to be a vital resource, particularly if it is opened up for free public use. By centralizing and mapping data about surveillance and censorship in near real time, it would help inform not only EU politicians but journalists, lawmakers, human rights activists, and citizens internationally.

I'm curious to see what this becomes, if anything. Kind of sounds like an attempt to monopolize on surveillance, but whatever.

this stuff is crazy, honestly i just wrote a paper in English about this stuff. my personal opinion is the internet should be open and free from peering eyes. they think they can stop radical behavior by monitoring and censoring whats going on on the internet but in reality there is always word of mouth, colleges, phones, and hopefully the media. the more time they waste taking away freedoms the more time people will waste fighting for them back, and soon enough they will not be able to contain the riots and internet wars over this petty idea that the governments can control the internet.

and honestly the us government should be one to speak about internet surveillance.

It's kind of funny how the privacy of the mail system and landlines is so highly prized, but as soon as you use a cell phone or communicate over the internet it seems like everyone and their dog thinks they have the right to access everything you do.

Privacy laws need to be upgraded for the 21st century.

Another step in internet warfare. The monitoring will probably be used to hack systems such as the Great Firewall of China, Iran, and others in order to make propaganda and other unwanted nonsense available.

To remind everyone, it was the BBC who broadcasted the codes giving the green light for the coup that overthrew Mossadeq in Iran.
The girlfriend.

This.

In America (at least), it is a federal offense to read someone else's mail without a warrant. Too, you cannot get a warrant without probable cause.

Likewise, it is a federal offense to tap into someone's landlines without warrant. As with mail, you need probable cause to get a warrant.

Why, then, is a warrant not required to track every single bit of my internet useage?

This is great and all but won't the offending countries just block this site too?

This could be a good thing as a resource to track censorship, or this could be a bad thing if a government with less than honorable intentions looks at a section of their country and says, "Hey! That area isn't being censored enough! Let's go get em!"

We shall see. I'm not gonna hate or support just yet. wink.gif

Looks more like a global "neighborhood watch" than an internet site.
