That looks like a "gas" powered Generator front and center...

True, but a better use nonetheless instead of flushing it down the toilet smile.gif

Electrolytic cracking requires electricity...and electricity costs something. It's an interesting idea, and from the paper they linked, urea electrolysis is more efficient at producing H2 than water electrolysis. Apply a voltage to the electrode, crack urea, run the H2 through a fuel cell, produce electricity and water. Good show.

Im my eyes it doesn't matter how efficient this thing is. Lets take a step back from our highly privileged lives for a moment and look at this device.

The fact that its powered by urine is great for remote place's in the world, or to take camping/fishing/hunting. Yea, their version might be highly inefficient but how much money did they get to spend on R&D? What could happen to their working idea if more money was spent and they had better access to facility's that would help them create a better result?

This is a great idea. kudo's to these girls. Turning urine into something usable is great! anything we can do with waste is useful.

Not 100% new but seems more practical. I think the one I heard of a year or more was batteries you peed on to recharge or something...

Urine is urea and water, two hydrogen containing molecules. Not that crazy that you can use electrolysis on both to produce hydrogen. This still requires a fuel cell to produce power efficiently though(not cheap right now)...

edit- they're using a generator, which is just burning the hydrogen. Cheap to operate and purchase, but wastes a lot of the potential energy.

Would like to see more proof of this, until then I don't buy it. At least not in the "WOW, amazing what these girls have done"-way.

Let's be serious here: a couple of girls find an amazing solution that none of the other university-schooled engineers couldn't come up with .... This isn't Disney ...
