Uh, is there any evidence to support...

Is there any evidence to show that frequently changing your overclocks can cause quicker component breakdown than if you'd just left them OC'd?

My sig system has been chugging along 24/7 for the past year-ish with her GTX 580s both at 1.125 mV and 900MHz as my everyday setting. I settled on that as a daily OC, down from briefly running them for a few weeks at 1.38 mV @ 933MHz, and I've never really changed it since. I'm now starting to think I want to reduce the chance of a random component failure due to high voltage (is 1.125 even that high for a GTX 580? I've seen much higher!) so I've set Afterburner to run the cards at stock settings for daily use. When I game, which is usually an hour or more per day if I have time, I crank her back up to the overclocked setting. Will repeatedly altering the voltage and overclock from stock to OC'd and back on a daily basis cause any issues? I may be nuts but I feel like if it's how I've run them for so long now, they're used to it, and switching it up so often may start problems. Kind of like how if you bend a piece of metal back and forth from straight to bent, it eventually snaps, whereas if you left it alone it'd be fine.

FYI: My GPU temps during the summer months reached into the high 40s after extensive gaming; the rest of the year they rarely break 38 or 39C if I'm playing a marathon run of Witcher 2 or something. Idle/daily computing in the mid 20s, and they throttle (naturally) to 0.962 mV when they're not being used (such as when I'm surfing Chrome or Firefox, writing papers, etc).

So: Should I leave em alone, or go ahead and set up the dual (Stock; OC'd) Afterburner profiles and use the lower setting when not gaming, despite the fact that the cards down-throttle anyway?

I'd find this nearly impossible since pretty much no chips are exactly the same so testing this would be nearly impossible to get an accurate statement.

Considering most chips these days have that feature built in (turbo, etc)....I doubt it effects it that much.

All good points. I'm being a bit paranoid I guess. We all know that some unlucky guys have their cards blow up even without touching the voltages or core speeds, so there's really no way of telling. As long as the temps are in check I guess I'm doing ok.

i wouldnt worry about chip degradation unless your pumping in too much voltage and/or temps are really high..
i would set 2 profiles in AB, one at stock and one at your OC which is what i have done.. i use automatic profile management where the stock profile is set for 2D clocks and the OC set at 3D clocks

As far as I know GPUs and CPUs can survive moderate over voltage for very long periods of time.
I do know that people have reported GDDR5 having problems due to overclocks, though.

Clockspeeds/voltage fluctuation are likely to not impact reliability over long term as much as temperature fluctuation.
