Did I make a mistake?

Thread Starter
I just purchased my new cpu and I got myself an i7 3770.....I found out after that it is the 3770k that is the one that you can overclock..... Should I return the 3770 and go for the k denotation or just stick with the 3770? I would like to OC it but I am not sure if it is worth the headache to send it back and wait another god knows how long for new egg to send me the 3770k.....Will I notice a HUGE performance boost by switching when it comes to gaming?

I do have a Cooler Master evo hyper 212 so I should be able to OC the chip a fair amount. I am guessing that the Sabertooth will allow for decent OC as well....

Any insight?

Thanks.

I would send it back but that's me. I heard you can OC the multiplier on the locked version up to 40x though, so if 4GHz is a decent enough OC for you then just keep it. While it is really fast stock.. it might be rather helpful to OC on the CPU demanding games out there.

Send it back ASAP. Yes you will notice a difference in gaming and all other computing processes. Some larger than others depending on game and PC specs. The 3770k is amazing! I OC the one I had to 4.7ghz with a CM Hyper 212 with great temps. "K" version is a must.

personally i would return it and get the K version purely for overclocking. the i7 3770 will still give you a good gaming experience and really where an overclocked cpu will show its colors is in say benching your GPU with 3Dmark11. how much overclocking an ivy bridge CPU translates into increased FPS in games i am not sure but i dont expect it would be much increase in gaming performance tho maybe more CPU intesive games might benifit thinking.gif

I returned the 3770 and I am getting the 3770k. Anyone have a similar build as me have a rough idea of what a fairly stable OC is for this chip with a 212 cooler?
You should be able to get a stable OC of about 4.4GHz, maybe even 4.5 thumb.gif

Did you see my last post? IB runs great on air until you hit a certain threshold, usually 4.5-4.8ghz depending on chip quality and voltage requirement. After you hit that threshold temps get outrageously high very fast.
