I could be very very wrong.

The book in question is being discredited by other SEAL team members for variety of reasons, not the least of which being the author's questionable involvement status in both the mission and the team.

Can't read the article at work but it sounds like a good way to kill a few minutes.

It also depends on your rank. My best friend is in the Navy, he is a Fireman, so he would be referred to as Fireman X. If you're casually referring to someone in the Navy, the proper term would be Sailor, not Seaman (Seaman is actually a specific rank as well)

Yeah....sailors is the proper term. All navy personnel are sailors, so you can call SEALS sailors as well. The navy is a bit different in that they integrate their MOS (jobs) into their ranks, whereas other services dont (eg a Marine E5 is always E-5 sergeant regardless of their MOS - by contrast navy - an E-6 corpsman is referred to as HM1 (petty officer first class). If anyone has watched Generation Kill, the doc there is a Navy Corpsman with rank E-5 - he is referred to as HM2 (2nd class petty officer hospital corpsman) several times throughout.

Each of the seven received a punitive letter of reprimand and a partial forfeiture of pay for two months. Those actions generally hinder a military member's career.

The forfeiture of pay sucks, but an LOR isn't really a big deal. It disapears when they get re-assigned, for the enlisted guys. It might hurt their chances of a promotion in the short term though. It would mostly hurt any officers.

And honestly, as an enlisted member myself, this is nothing. Disclosing classified information is extremely punishable, including things like millitary prison time, so yeah, they got off pretty easy. I guess that's what happens when you're a national hero!

Yeah, there was always a friendly rivalry between branches wink.gif But when it comes to Army vs Marines we all know the Marines are the best thumb.gif

I'd say that perhaps some of them thought they wouldn't get caught. And the benefit (getting paid) may have outweighed the risk in their minds. If you tell a friend, then that friend tells a friend, then next thing you know -- your commanding officer knows.

It's all downhill from there. All that said -- these guys got off really easy. Most uniformed members would get slammed for sharing classified info.
