iPad beginner

Thread Starter
My parents have against all my advice decided to buy themselves a new ipad 4. Despite being near certain they will hardly ever use it I think they have seen a few of their friends with one and decided they clearly need one as well.
Naturally they have instantly turned to me despite my protests against the purchase to look into what extras they will need and how to set it up etc.

The problem is I know nothing about tablets, they have never interested me and ive never even used one. So I was hoping someone would be able to offer me some basic advice.

For starters what does/doesn't it come with? About the only thing I have seen about ipads is handfuls of pictures of broken ones after they have been dropped. Do they come with a case to protect against this or do you need to buy one?
For charging what adapters do they come with?
How easy are they to use generally and is it likely older users would need a separate mouse and keyboard?
Also how does connecting to the internet work? I assume they can easily connect to their wireless network but how about when going out and also going abroad?

I appreciate any help.

In the box you only get a Usb Charger + Cable. It does not come with a case.

Scroll down to "Whats in the box"

You can buy third party or genuine cases from places like Apple, Currys or even Tesco. Usually any electrical store.

I think its easy to use, i dont think you can get a mouse for an iPad but you can get a keyboard.

Have you bought the 3g/4g iPad or wifi only version?

Wifi is simple you just goto settings then select wifi, then select the wireless network.

May help in setting it up.

It will ask you to connect to wifi in the setup procedure when you first use it.

Edit:

Also For charging the plug is just a Apple USB charger, but the cable is a lighting adapter but they are expensive and i believe they still havent been reversed engineered yet so no cheap ones on ebay.

However if it is a iPad 2 or a old iPad retina without the lighting adapter then you will have the old style apple connector and they are not very expensive on ebay around £2.

The one they have got is the 16GB wifi model.

I assume that means they are limited to only connecting to standard wireless networks whatever. Forgive my ignorance on this but I have never owned a smart phone let alone a tablet. While computers are my thing ive never felt any need whatsoever for any of this mobile computing fad.

I might have to look at a mains charger for it then, while charging from usb is fine for them at home they want to take it on holiday with them so would need one there.

Thats fine, it does come with a charger, its a usb charger.

Please see picture

That picture is what the charger is like, it will have a different cable thought as they have recently changed it to a lighting cable.

The link below is two the apple compare iPad section. if you scroll down to the connector you will see what i mean about the connector. The lightening connecter was only really within the last month. So until you get you iPad i would wait in buying extra chargers.

Link to apple

Is it possible to use a mains usb charger and simply connect with the standard usb lightning connector? Because those are sold for a for a lot cheaper, infact I might even have one knocking about around the house.

Ye it should charge as long as charge but depending on how powerful it is will mean how fast it charges.

The iPad will charge from a PC usb but 4x slower than the iPad charger.

Source Voltage Current Power
PC USB 5 volts 0.5 amps 2.5 Watts
iPhone Charger 5 volts 1.0 amps 5 Watts
iPad Charger 5.1 volts 2.1 amps 10 watts

Please dont forget i did say it comes with a charger and cable.

Info about charging

Sorry not sure if ive confused myself here.

The charger it comes with is a lightning to usb charger correct?

Which as I say is fine round the home because they can connect it to their computer, however they want to take it on holiday with them when they wont have a computer to connect it to. In that case they would need to buy a seperate charger right? Either a proper apple mains lightning one or connecting the standard cable to a mains usb adapter.

No sorry.

It comes with a Mains USB Charger AND a USB to Lightening Cable.

So you want to charge it you can plug the Usb to lightening cable into the USB charger.

Hope this makes a bit more sense.

The iPad comes with a charger that you plug into a wall. Then you plug the included lightning cable into the charger to charge the iPad.

Ok thats good. Thanks for clearing that up.

On cases I see a very wide range, both in design and price. Are the more expensive hard shelled or the lumpy ones recommended over a simple material case with some extra padding? Is that enough to actually prevent damage from a drop or simply to protect against scratching.
