I think we all start out in Desktop Support. Luckily, I quickly grabbed the Desktop Engineer role at a previous employer when it opened up, and that opened up so many doors for me. I'm 23 with no more than 4 years of enterprise IT experience, but I have touched and learned so many different products, OS's, environments, etc. I love what I do, and I especially love the Desktop Engineer side of things (Microsoft SCCM, software packaging/distribution, creating OS images, policies & security, etc). Standardize, Streamline, Simplify...that's what I am all about.
I also love working with Microsoft's new Private Cloud stuff, which is awesome. Virtualization is the future (even though it's already here). I never thought I would be making ~70k/yr at 23 years old, in central KY mind you...cost of living is cheap, so the money is great. I recently applied (and have interview soon) for a multi-year Systems Engineer contract job with the US Army, around $85k/yr. I'm so excited!

) and im really glad that you have decided to pass it on, as I say I am in the same boat and I certainly would not want that kind of responsibility at all.
