Looking for new "gaming" headset - Page 2

I never liked the G35 that much, virtual 7.1 was terrible and I wish I had bought Sennheiser 360 instead.
It is the virtual surround that is terrible with fast action games - not surround sound altogether smile.gif

If you play fast action games like COD or BF3 etc, then get yourself a decent soundcard and a set of Roccat Kave 5.1 or Razer Tiamat 7.1 true surround gaming headsets. Both of these are tru surround headsets with the physical speakers inside to provide all the channels. They ARE NOT virtual surround headsets and they do not require you to use any sort of virtual surround processing with them.

For gaming alone, these two headsets are where it's at and will start you down the road of ppl accusing you of hacking because your surround sound is so accurate that you will hear them exactly where they are on the map in the game you play smile.gif

It's not like stereo (2.0) headphones giving you an idea where they other player is, or virtual headsets (also only 2.0) mushing things up to try and give you an idea where the other player is - true surrounf headsets will give you an audio queue as to the exact location they are in the full 360 degree sound stage, and not only that, they will give you a much more accurate idea as to the distance away from you that player is in that 360 degree sound stage.

If you really want to limit your surround sound in game, in-turn limiting your own ability in games, then buy the Sennheiser 360...

bs, dude. I've owned roccat kave headset + xonar dg earlier and now have sennheiser hd598 + creative titanium. 3d sound is way better than it was with kave. Got my kave-headset still.
Fine headset but heavy as hell. I used 'em for 6 months so i have experience or those.

Good soundcard with good stereo headphones are better than 99% of headsets. PC350/360 headsets are based on cheaper sennheiser products afaik.

With my current setup i have no problems about knowing where someone is shooting or running in bf3 for example. And i ain't using any cmss3d(or whatever) stuff by creative with bf3.

Yeah, thanks for the tips.

I ordered HD598, Zalman ZM-MIC 1 and Xonar DG (for now).

I think I will be pleased with the results.

If you think positional audio is better with a stereo headphone then with actual 5.1 headsets then you either can not tell the difference (deaf much?) or you never configured your 5.1 Kave's properly.

I've been FPS gaming for over a decade and I've been down the round of expensive 2.0 headphones (having studied audio engineering I needed them anyway) and having moved from 2.0 to 5.1 headsets for games I can say without doubt that the positional audio presented with the Kave's is unmatched by any 2.0 headphones I have tried - and I have tried most.

It honestly is day vs night comparing the 5.1 positional audio via true 5.1 headset vs 2.0 headphones running simulated 3D.

They are definitely heavy compared to 2.0 headphiones - but that is expected when you have 8 drivers in them vs 2 drivers.

Generalised statements do not really help.
  1. A good soundcard will help all headphones/headsets perform better
  2. Good stereo headphones WILL sound better then stereo headsets designed for games
  3. Good stereo headsets WILL produce a much better stereo soundstage and reproduce music more accurately then true 5.1/7.1 headsets. It's pretty obvious the space provided when you only have to fit 1x driver into an earcup in 2.0 headphones will accommodate much better driver then you can when you have limited space available due to the need to fit 4x drivers into each earcup with true 5.1 headsets
  4. Good stereo headsets WILL NOT produce better positional audio from a 5.1 audio stream then true 5.1/7.1 headsets. 5.1 positional audio through 5.1 speakers will provide for more accurate positional audio then 5.1 positional audio mixed down to 2.0 stereo and processed to recreate a virtual 5.1 positional audio again - it really isn't that hard to grasp that. And while the soundtrack may not sound as accurate when played through the smaller drivers true 5.1 headsets and stereo music will not have anywhere near the same stereo soundstage or audio accuracy as good 2.0 headphones - the reproduction and accuracy of positional audio is really all that they should be judged on as that is solely what they are designed for.

As I mentioned earlier - the difference in positional audio performance between my Kave's (true 5.1 headset) and stereo headphones is honestly night and day.

But since the OP has made his purchase, I'll leave it as this, with this post simply as an alternative to your post.
