A new report published by Strategy Analytics says that the Samsung Galaxy S3 has become the world’s best selling smartphone. The Boston, Ma. analysis firm says that there were 18 million Samsung Galaxy S3 handsets shipped in Q3 compared to shipments of 16.2 million Apple iPhone 4S handsets, currently the second most popular smartphone.

I think it's 2 or 3 consecutive quarters now

That web page has the Q2 figures on it, so I'm not quite sure why you'd say this?

Expect the S3 to not top Q4 sales. The iPhone 5 build-up will have really affected the 4S sales figures, which are still very high given this fact.

It's good to see a decent Android handset finally making some ground though, the S3 is the first real consumer-known rival to get anything close to the iPhone publicity/sales. I really liked my S3, I felt it far ahead of even its Android rivals (One X etc). It was just too big for me. People are really embracing the S3, it's great for competition.

Should they not be comparing the galaxy S3 with the iPhone 5 sales? Did I miss something? I thought the iPhone 5 was the latest...

You're right. I didn't look at the chart as I just read the article itself. S3 is finally the Android phone that has truly been successfully marketed. The first Motorola Droid was the first Android phone that really exploded Android's popularity, but even that can't compare to the S3's success.

iP5 production is somewhat halted, so it wouldn't be very fair. Apple has sold more than 5 million so far, that's all we know.

Doesn't really matter whose on top, trading blows in the sales numbers is a good thing for consumers, it means that we're getting better and more competitive products to choose from.
