Painting Motherboard Heatsinks

Thread Starter
I currently have an Asus Sabertooth x58 motherboard with a custom watercooling loop. Since there are not really any options to watercool the motherboard chips I wanted to paint the heatsink to better fit my Orange/Black theme. I was wondering if painting them would have a negative impact on the thermal properties of the heatsinks. They are ceramic heatsinks, unlike the standard metal ones. I was probably just going to put a couple coats of black on them with a few orange accents

whatever paint you used it would need to have good thermal properties otherwise it doesn't do it's job. the ceramic creates a micro porous surface that allows for greater heat dissipation. paint would just screw it all up, and if you oc you don't want your power regulation to overheat and go bonkers.

It might increase temps slightly but not to an unreasonable level.

However you'll be better off powder coating them and then paint in the orange.

My spider sense is saying that yes there will be a negative impact as the paint would act as an insulator and the heatsinks would not be as able to dissipate the heat.

hmm.. maybe I'll just hold off on painting them then. I was trying to get a custom block made for the NB anyway. I'll probably just leave them how they are since the NB already gets pretty hot. Thanks for your input guys. +rep for everyone

Are you using waterblocks?

I might have mis-understood, if you're using waterblocks it'll be fine, if you're using passive blocks then painting them will be a problem.

No, you understood correctly. I'm using the stock ceramic passive heatsinks. I want to get a custom block made to fit the NB and VRMs as they both get pretty toasty
