of course there has been a time were documents were intentionally "leaked". But I dont see anything on Apple.com's home page yet publicizing their donation.

Had this not been revealed, OCN would've just went on hating. Oh wait..

Also, Samsung yes, foreign, also did this for marketing. They have a huge consumer base for their phones in the US and this will gain them more favor in the eyes of the american consumer. heck my 3 workers and myself have Samsung phones.

I wouldnt put Samsung "higher" than Apple based on this donation at all, really.

Perception. "No one" knows how much NFL is worth or has in the bank (as in, not public knowledge), but everyone knows Apple is filthy rich and is considered the most valuable company in the world.

You want people to consider this as a completely separate event, disregarding everything else they know about Apple, and objectively talk about it. Most people aren't like that, and even when they are agreeing that this is a good thing, considering Apple's past doings, they do not see it as good enough to, in their eyes, redeem Apple.

Extreme example, but did you know Hitler is responsible for inventing the highway, the Volkswagen, the Olympic torch relay ceremony, was among the first to implement laws against animal abuse, and was the first to link smoking to cancer?

He also managed to reduce unemployment by 5 million people in 4 years, better than President Obama. 75 years later people still don't like him very much though.

Maybe you should write that same comment there.

I'm sure someone else already did that for him. I already explained why Apple is viewed differently than other companies (and mostly with good reason, even if some people exaggerate about it) and will have to severely outdo both its previous reputation and other companies reputations in a positive way to be kindly regarded. If, before this donation, someone accused Apple of only providing a Donate button instead of donating themselves, they had good reason to, seeing as that is exactly what Apple did regarding the quake in Japan.

Tim Cook has promised to change Apple's less than charitable reputation, and we are now starting to see it, but it will still take a while. You and others baiting people to regard two different companies as absolute equals is just as bad as those saying these 2.5 million dollars are worthless (Apple could have donated more, but that's still good money).

Trying to change popular opinion (disliking Apple) on OCN by discussing what is, at heart, a matter of personal beliefs is like trying to change someone's political view, and we all know how that goes here on OCN.

OCN will start liking Apple more when Apple quits being like Apple. Less patent abuse, litigation, blocking innovation, less stinginess, etc.

Please refer to the above regarding that question of yours.

Talking negatively about Apple != not having donated, please don't imply OCN as a whole (of which you're a part of) doesn't care about Sandy.

Nothing like tax deductible donations.. this didn't cost them a thing.

I can't believe I read every page of this thread. Many of you are hateful, spiteful people about venial things.

I grew up in Staten Island, and most of my family still lives there. I don't find ANY donation to EVER to be offensive or "not enough," and the donations are certainly very welcome after this disaster. Thankfully my family was relatively unscathed, but I have friends who have not been. Apple (or any company) do not have anymore more moral obligation to donate than anyone else. Americans, in general, are extremely generous people when it comes to disaster aid relief, and this has certainly been the case for Sandy. I can safely say that corporate donations do not provide the vital pillar necessary to keep the aid effort afloat; individual private donations do. I'm not going to sit here and point fingers at you questioning your charity because it shows small-mindedness and selfishness. Everyone should give what they can, when they can (if they are able.)

I've seen some of you throw around numbers in the billions as an acceptable donation based on your vague understanding of corporate finance. Do you really believe Apple should have to donate 5-15% of its operating capital every time a natural disaster hits in the world? Does that seem sustainable to you? That would be a very dangerous precedent to set. Of course the more money people give the better, but I would never be offended or irate because a donation was "not enough" like some child. Apple also provided an extremely easy, stream-lined way to donate money to disaster relief via iTunes. Some of you may dismiss it, but there is legitimate value behind an action like that; self-serving or not. Apple deserves some credit for facilitating those donations. When I donate my time at the local shelter or food bank I am allowed to feel good about myself. It is a small part of the reason why I do it. Likewise, Apple is allowed to benefit from their donation by way of positive PR. Why the heck not? It was a profoundly good thing to give money to provide food, blankets, and shelter to thousands of suffering people.

Don't look at gift horse in the mouth.

Sad fact: If Apple had donated more than Samsung people on OCN would have complained that they were trying to 1-up Samsung. There are many people in this thread that are just hateful, plain and simple. Good for both Samsung and Apple for their donations, anyone complaining that any amount isn't enough is selfish.

The amount of people complaining that Apple donated money is too...Damn...High... rolleyes.gif
post #157 of 199
good. more money for relief.

why is everyone calling everyone out? (dont answer that, we know why)
if things happened in the reverse order the more avid apple fans would be jumping all over this like it was a big as deal as the samsung fans are trying to make this. some of you need to stop trying to act like youre some how above those that have an issue with this. we know youd be on that hate wagon for samsung if the opposite had happened.

IMHO those who are skeptical of apples/samsungs motives arent entirely in the wrong. the problem here is that if apples initial intent was to donate, they probably would have donated at the same time they opened up the link in itunes; samsung just straight up donated. while both of these can be looked at as "obvious" PR stunts, samsung isnt -lack of a better term- back tracking trying to save face.

at the end of the day, both companies are helping out and thats a good thing. thumb.gif

Wow guys, that is some twisted stuff. At least they donated, no reason to hate on them so much. Thats like if a loved one in your life died and some billionaire gave you a million dollars would you say "thats it?" Or would you be grateful. Not the best example but you get it.

Except they haven't gave even close to 1 million to every person... have they? Fool.

It's more than likely not even close to 0.001 cents
