Build for 3d modeling and gaming

Thread Starter
Hello ! Looking for some help here !

Rig is gonna be used for 3d works ( 3ds max, Zbrush) and some gaming to,

I'm hesitating between the 3770k and the 3930k. As i understand, the 3770k offers a better upgrade path in the future because ivy bridge express will be on the same motherboard ?

Also i'm on a tight budget right now so that is something to consider also. Im also considering waiting for haswell, but im not to sure about that either.

Thrutefully i'm kind of lost ! tongue.gif

Yeah go for the 3770k for the reasons you mentioned above, with a decent z77e mobo (Gigabyte, asRock, Asus or MSI), at least 16GB of RAM (Samsung, Corsair Vengeance or G, Skill Ripjaws X 1600MHz), an SSD (Samsung 830 or 840) and a 7950 video card (starting point and if budget does not allow scale down from here to a 7870).

See my build log, in sig, for ideas.

The 3930k offers a better upgrade path. 1155 is a dead socket after ivy bridge. The x79 platform will have ivy bridge ”enthusiast” class CPUs next year. If you don't mind spending the extra cash, you can benefit from the higher memory bandwidth, extra cores and upgrade path x79 provides. To ease your budget woes, you can get a 3820 in the interim, and upgrade to IB-E when they are released. thumb.gif

Ohhh ok ! And socket 1155 supports IB and will die afterwards ? In that case X79 (2011) seems like a much better choice

Yeah. The next gen CPU's, codenamed Haswell, are going to be on a whole new socket from what I read.

ok so x79 with a low end cpu, maybe like the 3820 mentionned above, and then upgrade to Ivy Express next year. Is that a good plan ?
