I got up this morning and whipped up 2 more SATA cables before I head off to work for the day. Seems that they go together much faster now that I got the procedure down. biggrin.gif



Two more cables done, one that is straight and one that has a 90 degree bend to it. I think I will do one more with a 90 degree bend, then I may have to place another order with MDPC for more orange SATA sleeve to make a couple more for when I put 4-6 3TB hard drives in for a RAID array. But that'll be another day.




Even close up the ends look pretty good. I must say, compared to the black heat shrink that my company uses, the stuff from MDPC is 10 times easier to work with and it shrinks to the perfect size at a temperature for my heat gun.

Sadly I will now be at a sleeving stand still for a couple days. I went ahead and ordered some 18AWG wire to do the power wire sleeving and it won't be in. I've got plenty of 18AWG wire, but none in Gray or Orange, and after doing the SATA cable, I realized just how much nicer the sleeved wires look when the under color matches. Hopefully the seller at Amazon.com won't take too long, I did pay for expedited shipping.



Now to figure out what I want to do for case lighting.

Originally I was thinking of going with this: http://www.plasmatrim.com/

But at $60 a pop, that will get expensive fast ( http://www.thephotonfactory.com/shop/ ), especially if I get like 4 of them.

So I'll happily take suggestions as to lighting. The ability to change colors via USB / computer program is nice, but there are other ways to do that for less money but I'd lose the computer controlled feature. Something like this: LEDwholesalers 16.4ft RGB Color Changing Kit with LED Flexible Strip, Controller with 44-button Remote and Power Supply


Or maybe, since this is just going to be a nice orange build, why would I want green or pink lights? Maybe just go with White LEDs?

I completely agree, I would personally go for the white leds to showcase all the hard work that has been put in color matching everything. I think that putting any colored lights in there could take away from the beauty of the build. smile.gif

Yeah, the white I think will be how I will run it most of the time when the lights are on. The nice thing about the RGB LED's is that I could also get the lights to also turn Orange, which would also be good.

I was looking at the NZXT Hue (the same people that make the Switch 810 case), and it's a nice looking product, and will do just about everything I want ... except the USB control.

NZXT HUE RGB Led Controller - $32.99

It even comes with 6 feet of RGB LED's. But that would just be a "drop in fix", and I want this build to be something a little more than just "buy and assemble". But for another build, maybe for my wife's computer, I might pick one up.

So I think I will do a bit of research and may go with something that I found.

USB-LED-1 RGB LED Controller

and

Flexible Color Changing RGB Ribbon Flexible LED Light Strip 12v (5m 16.4ft/reel)

Together it's just a hair more expensive than the PlasmaTrim thing, but I get 5 meter of LEDs! Couple that with that controller, which has a USB interface, and I'll be able to control the lights from software and program the color changes.

Two more cables done, one that is straight and one that has a 90 degree bend to it. I think I will do one more with a 90 degree bend, then I may have to place another order with MDPC for more orange SATA sleeve to make a couple more for when I put 4-6 3TB hard drives in for a RAID array. But that'll be another day.

Even close up the ends look pretty good. I must say, compared to the black heat shrink that my company uses, the stuff from MDPC is 10 times easier to work with and it shrinks to the perfect size at a temperature for my heat gun.

Well, I have a 4TB Buffalo NAS server that is getting pretty long in the tooth and I expect a failure any time now. The drives are over 5 years old now and that is about the MTBF for them. Also, the NAS unit is so old that it only has a 10/100 Ethernet port, so even though I have CAT6 in the house, it runs pretty slow. Right now all I really can put on it is MP3's and pictures. I thought about replacing the NAS with a new one, but I might as well just kill two birds with one stone since this machine will be on 24/7 doing gaming or Folding, so I may as well make it my video server as well.

Well, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on these 2 things:

USB-LED-1 RGB LED Controller

and

Flexible Color Changing RGB Ribbon Flexible LED Light Strip 12v (5m 16.4ft/reel)

I already downloaded the software and will start messing with it. It should allow me to make any color and intensity light color I want. I even have a couple really twisted ideas doing some custom programming. One of which be to vary the light and intensity depending on the water or CPU temperature. Maybe even have it flash in some sort of police light fashion if it gets over say 90 degrees C to alert me or my wife.
