HTPC build advice

Thread Starter
Hi everyone

I'm building an htpc for my parents living room and would you like check if everything is in order.
There will be no gaming so I think the latest APU would be great for this system. I heard APUs like faster memory
so I went with 1866MHz.

Parts

CPU: AMD A6-5400K
Motherboard: Asrock FM2A75 Pro4-M
Memory: 8GB G.Skill Sniper 1866MHz
Case: Antec NSK-2480
PSU: 380W included with NSK-2480
SSD: Samsung 830 64GB

All good, except you don't need that much memory, 4GB at 1600MHz would be fine. I'd also try to passively cool that APU for a relatively silent machine. Also some companies like Corsair have some power management on their PSUs where the fan does not spin if the PSU stays cool, that would also save on noise. Also you can get some PSUs that are more like a laptop power bar then a PSU, so there is no noise at all.

I agree, your HTPC will likely never use up 4GB, let alone 8GB. As for noise, you can look at some larger, compact heatsinks, although since it's an APU, it will generate very little heat. You could build it with the stock cooler and see if it's quiet enough for you. You might also want to consider a large hard drive for storing videos. Also, once it's built, look into your bios to turn down the fan speeds.

What will you be using the HTPC for? You should just go with an integrated CPU/Mobo/GPU combo, like an AMD E-350 or better will be perfectly fine for streaming video.

And get 2x2GB RAM...

If noise is a concern get a fanless super efficient Seasonic PSU here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151097. You would probably have to find it elsewhere since you are in Finland.

You could grab a m-350 and a pico PSU as well....

Thanks for help guys.

I may never actually use all of that memory, but the difference in price is just miniscule so I might as well go with 8GB. I'm not going to be using the stock heatsink, thinking about the Scythe Shuriken, open for suggestions.

That'd work great for any heat you might encounter. However, I'd carefully check out the dimensions of the heatsink first and compare it to the interior dimensions of your case, with some space for the fan to work. Also, it's not uncommon for that type of heatsink to get in the way of motherboard heatsinks or RAM slots. I think it's unlikely you'll run into any problems, but it doesn't hurt to check.
