Can't get my 965 BE above 18.5 multiplier

Thread Starter
Hi All,

I've Googled and Googled, and it seems like folks everywhere have absolutely no problem going to 20x or 21x multiplier with relatively low voltage. Even at 1.55v vcore, mine is still terribly unstable at 19x.

A little about my build:
CPU - 965 BE (Currently stable at 18.5 x 200 @ 1.4750v) (I know the voltage is high, more on this later).
Mobo - ASUS M4A78T-E
Cooler - CM Hyper 212 Plus applied with CM High Performance compound
Case/Cooling - Thermaltake Speedo, with 1 intake, 2 exhaust fans
PSU - Corsair TX 750
RAM - 2 x 2GB GSkill Rapjaws 1600mhz, 2 x 4GB Kingston Blu Red Edition 1600 mhz.
Video 1 - Gigabyte GTX 660Ti OC
Video 2 (dedicated Physx) - Asus GTX 275
OS - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit.

The computer was originally built in October 2008, so keep that in mind regarding about degrading performance of the power supply in particular. The H212 with fresh compound, 660Ti, and Kingston ram was plugged in earlier this week.

Now for the problems.

Voltage - My voltage setting in the bios is always way off CPU-Z's reading. Currently my bios is set to 1.475, but CPU-Z peaks at right around 1.430. When I tried my most extreme test thus far, the bios was set to 1.550, CPU-Z peaked at 1.490. From my research, looks like vdroop might be responsible. Should I trust CPU-Z or Bios setting for a safe reading?

Multiplier - Voltage inconsistencies considered, there is no way my voltage should be at 1.49 (per CPU-Z) to reach 19.0x. And even at that voltage, Prime95 leads to a BSOD in minutes, with core temps hovering at 61 or 62 C.

What am I missing guys?

My real world objective is to maximize the gaming performance with the hardware I already have. I am not chasing benchmarks or internet glory.

Thanks.

The voltage drop is definately because of vdroop and is nothing to worry about. Under load, voltage drops, its normal.

I would say you're limiting yourself by mixing your RAM like that however.

If it s the first version of the 965 then maybe the mobo is limiting you ,as the initial release was a 125W TDP ,not much room to go higher in speed.

Gaming performance from that increase is close to null .Imagine that you have 2 FPS more at a 100 base and that in the middle of the game the PC locks up.Did the 2 FPS worth it ?! I don t think so.Not to say you could smoke your mobo.

Get a better video card if you want more in gaming.

You have a C-2 stepping processor, they are no where near as easy to overclock as the C-3 steppings. My C-2 965 would top out at about 4.1 ghz @ 1.53 volts. The last 965 i bought was a C-3 and it will hit 4.4 Ghz on stock voltage ( look at validation below), there is just that much difference in the chips themselves. I would say its a perfectly normal C-2 chip smile.gif
