Is it not better to buy a 7970 Ghz card and get 15% better performance and 4 game pack bundle? (I'm not in any way a AMD fanboy, I've had more Nvidia GPU's than I have with AMD)

This is a great idea for Asus. If only they wouldn't use so much thermal paste the cooler would perform so much better at stock out of box. My 670 doesn't go past 55C in BF3 with new thermal paste...The cooler surface with the direct heatpipes are machined incredibly well. There are machining grooves in the surface but it is darn flat and there is no gap between the aluminum housing and the heatpipes. Pretty good IMO.
The only real improvement I could find with the heatsink would be to have higher CFM fans. Even at 100% fan the fans don't really blow that much, and the amount of heat transfer with the large heatpipes are incredible. If they had higher CFM fans on the DCII then the cooling performance would be incredible. But still quite impressed with 55C max with an aggressive fan profile with stock cooling...

I had this card for a couple months(dcii680 triple slot) and the cooler did a great job on the core temperature, but the VRM heatsink was not doing a great job. Also the memory chips were passively cooled with no heatsinks on them at all, bad idea there.

But I have no doubt that a two slot cooler could do the same job as the triple on a gtx 680. They run cool as is already.

Look at how the cooler made contact on gpu with the dcii triple slot cooler:

Two heatpipes don't even make contact. This is why I think the two slot cooler will do alright.

You got no clue dude. The fans where great, max temp = 53c in the middle of summer 30c ambient temp @1270/6700 with fans at 50%

Also the fans are the less important part, metal shroud, backplate, high end caps, high end vrm design, high end mosfet's. The best build 680 together with Lightning cards.
