[Build Log] Completed - The 'rents Christmas Surprise - AMD 5800k APU Build

The Story

Ok, so my parents need a new computer. They are currently running on an old dell pre-built with a Pentium 4. I have been planning replacement for a while, but they were going to pay for it. Today I found out they are not going to be able to pay for it. I have some savings so this is going to be a Christmas present for them from me, seeing as I have never really got them anything substantial.

The Plan

The plan is, seeing as they don't game, to get an AMD APU. This, to me seems the most cost effective choice. I will also get them a 64GB SSD for the OS, and upgrade them from Windows XP to windows 7. I will reuse the 320 GB hard drive they have in their current system for mass storage. I am also getting 16 GB of RAM, so the 8GB Vengeance will go into this system. I will use the PSU from my 'eBay or the Highway' build in this rig and use a spare Optical drive I have kicking around.

All this housed in a BitFenix Shinobi. I have been wanting to use this case since it came out. Clean looking and reasonably priced it should last them the years this system is going to serve them.

Parts List + Costs

  • 5800k -£95.99 - Ordered.
  • FM2 Board - £61.49 - Pre-ordered.
  • 64GB M4 SSD - £55.00 - Ordered.
  • 8GB RAM - Free - Ordered.
  • 320GB HDD from their current machine - Free Will be installed when the machine is given to them.
  • BitFenix Shinobi - £45.99 - ordered.
  • Spare ODD - Free

Listed Costs: £258.47
Total expected costs £300.

All the parts are ordered/pre-ordered. Just waiting on delivery. I spent £55 on 16gb of RAM for my sig rig, and the 8gb Corsair Vengeance is going into this rig.

All systems are go!

The total cost of this system, including the RAM I ordered for my personal rig, is: £310.50
Right on target. thumb.gif

For the apu yes thats all you need video connectors will be on the mother board. If its your parents pc and they don't game or anything just use it for checking email and surfing the internet whats the point of getting a ssd. Yes its nice but not needed the old hard drive you will be using would be good enough.

faster boot times...

Anyway, on topic, that seems like a good build. a motherboard i would suggest is the Asrock FM2A75M-ITX i dont think they need an a10, but if you want to get it, go ahead.

Mobo I was gonna go for a:

If it comes out in time. mad.gif

SSD because my dad is a teacher, uses word alot. An A10 because they are proberbly going to be using it for 5+ years. The P4 machine is at least 6 years old now...

He always complains about the speed of things. Considering I am reusing allot of stuff, for £60 it seemed silly to leave an SSD out in this day an age.

the problem with that motherboard is that it is a mATX motherboard, and the bitfenix shinobi only supports mITX motherboards.
