Windows 8 Recycle bin question.

Thread Starter
Hey guys.

I was in the recycle bin options screen just looking around and it seems that windows has set a side about 8 gigs or storage for it.
I guess thats for being able to undelete things. So I set it to delete completely instead, and then I set my delete options to (confirm delete).

So basicly the recycle bin has no more function. But my question is. Do I get those 8 gigs or storage back?

And do you think its better to keep the recycle bin active? or inactive?

Thanks
Happy time PC.

I thought the way the recycle bin worked was that if you set something in it, it simply flagged that data in a way that it didn't show up anymore but didn't actually move it anywhere until you emptied the bin. I didn't think it set aside any room at all, because you can delete things of any size.
Edit: even when you emptly the recycle bin it doesn't actually "move" the data, it just frees up the disk space it was using. Maybe that space you are seeing it set aside is for restore points?

Well I guess you could be right. But when I was looking in the settings for the recycle bin I thought I saw something in there for setting a side disk space. I remember seeing something like 8192 Megabytes allocated. But to be honest I could be completely wrong. Ive got a pretty crappy short term memory lol... anyway. When I saw that I thought to myself. Let me turn it off and just have windows throw up the Delete confirmation notification before acctual deletion.

Well maybe someone will chime in with a more difinitive answere.

Thanks for the help.

I was digging deep from a computer class I took years ago. I googled it and it seems like there is space set aside but it's not for the actual files, but more of an allocation table of where those files are at. Seems like a large amount of space for that though. I have W7 installed on one of my machines on an old recycled 30gig drive (kids room) and I guarantee the space allocated for that recycle bin can't be that large.

I believe what you're referring to is the amount of data that can be held in the recycle bin. In other words if you attempt to delete a file or files that are greater than your 8 Gbs, Windows will warn you that it's too large to be placed in the recycle bin and ask whether or not you'd like to permanently delete the file(s).

Ok I see so if recycle bin is empty it does not use any disk space. wow thats cool. So that number 8192 was a setting for Maximum allowed disk space for recycle bin. Not pre-allocated space.

Cool, thanks for the info.
