HD Tune comparison : Seagate 2TB 1TB/platter

Just initialized and formatted my new 1TB/platter Seagate 2TB drive. smile.gif

For anyone interested, here's my HD Tune comparisons of my 3 year old WD RE3 v brand new WD Caviar Black v brand new Seagate 2TB, in that order from left to right.

The Seagate is faster in everything except burst rate. Not sure if that's good or bad? Also of note, my Seagate speeds are faster than someone with the supposedly slower 3 platter version, but not by much at all. I'm wondering if he's on sata 3 though.
Bear in mind I'm on sata 2 not sata 3, so presumably speeds would be quicker on sata 3. My seagate is connected via eSATA from my enclosure to the eSATA on top of my case, which is connected to a regular sata motherboard socket. The WD drives connected internally via regular sata.

One thing worth noting - HDTune free only tests the first 1TB of a drive, so the access times appear lower than they actually are. (Notice the yellow dots only test the first half of the drive.)

Even losing in access times, its sequential speeds are so high it's just plain faster. thumb.gif

Very interesting and well spotted Kramy. I downloaded the free trial of HD Tune Pro instead of using the basic HD Tune and things have changed. Yes, yellow dots across the whole box now. Slower access time but higher burst rate. CPU usage also higher with HD Tune Pro. Here's my newer benchmark, Caviar Black 1TB on left, Seagate on right. Which would you say now is the better drive to use as main storage? Seagate was to be my backup drive. Is it still faster overall taking into account slower access time, to be used as my main drive instead of the Caviar Black?

edit: Well it seems this so called faster single platter technology isn't all it's cut out to be. I asked someone with the 3 platter version, also on sata 2, to test with HD Tune Pro. Here's his screenshots, and the difference is absolutely negligible.

The Seagate one is probably still faster. The 60% higher sequential speeds outweigh 11% worse access times.

The Blacks have more advanced NCQ, so may still hold their ground as OS drives. But you have an SSD - for storage or backups, the Seagate will be faster.
