Need barebones machine, for 4x SSD RAID

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
Hi all,

I have a friend who is a Captain in the US Air Force, he is trying to put together a machine for a project.

The only requirements for this project are high disk performance, and he already has 4x SSDs. All we need now is a barebones machine that supports RAID.

Since the military is kinda anal (go figure), the barebones machine needs to be from a "reputable" manufacturer, I can't home-build it for him.

I've already done some searching on NewEgg, but am having trouble... can anyone help me find a machine that is RAID ready?

Thanks!

Why does it need to be barebones? Why doesn't he just get a Dell Precision T3600 or something?

He already has 4 SSDs, he wants to try to use them.

The goal is to keep the cost down (unusual for government work, right?), buy buying a minimum rig that will support stripping out the hard drives from whatever machine is bought, and installing 4 SSDs and configuring RAID.

Kinda need more details about the build like budget, OS that he is planning on using, expected CPU/RAM usage, hardware or software raid, etc...

If he is using this for the military, why is he not going through official channels to acquire a workstation for this?

High disk performance doesn't always equate to 4 SSDs in Raid0. Are these consumer or enterprise SSDs? I would be looking at something a little more professional myself...

I'm sure the USAF has some seriously high performance SANs, so why not use a machine and iSCSI an array to it? I don't see how the USAF is going to let him use something that is non-standard to the environment.

@OP

The only barebones server vendors I know are Intel and Supermicro. Might be worth a look. smile.gif
