Help with DLNA device selection

Hey OCN, so I currently have a DLNA server, a little small one, that just looks like an external Harddrive but has a RJ-45 port on the back so I can stream the content to devices on the network. The downside to this device is that it only has one hard drive in it, and I'm worried that one day it'll die, and I'm going to lose everything I have on it.

This leads me to wanting to put together a new server that has dual harddrive slots, so I can Raid the two drives to clone eachother, that way if one dies, I have all the data still. I Don't need the 3rd drive slot for increased speed, as the one single drive can stream to multiple devices at once without any issues.

So I am looking for something along the lines of: (I think)
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=149536&Sku=D700-2440

Supports Raid, and DLNA, plus some other nifty features.

Can anyone suggest something better than the one I have linked? Trying not to blow the bank, hard-drives do not have to be included, I can pick them up sperate. I just want the functionality.

Cheers OCN, thanks in advanced!

Hey Sidious,

Have u considered building a mini server with FreeNas or a similar OS? You can use FreeNas on a Raid 1 configuration and add a DLNA plugin and configure it the way u want

I'm open to ideas, but I'm trying to avoid a full computer type build, and only need basic support, as I have a smart tv that I scream movies and tv shows from... And store some files on To access across the network.

Trying to stay on the cheaper side, that one I linked plus 2x 2tb hard drives would only run me about 350$...

But I am listening to what you may propose!

Just remember the "old" slashdot adage goes "raid is not back up". If any of the data on those drives would be missed at all make sure it is in another location.

I know you're going cheap but a really low end board with non-replaceable CPU and a few gigs of RAM would have quite a lot of advantages over this $100 device. Lots of software/hardware customization options comes to mind. You can upgrade the RAM as well as add more drives and there's FreeNAS as well as Amahi and some others. Probably not build-able for $100, especially if a chassis/PSU is necessary, but long-term I think you could save money on it.

Well what is the point of raid mirroring to drives if not to protect your data? My plan of doing this is so that I don't need to keep a copy of all the data on my desktop, or have another external to maintain all the data. I was looking at the raid Option so that it auto handles backups internally in case something ever goes wrong

RAID only protects you against physical drive failure. Because of this, RAID in and of itself is not a backup.

Right, which is what I'm worried about now is that the dlna server I have now, if the HD goes, ill lose everything. I want to raid two drives in a NAS to have some peace of mind with it.

But can anyone give some input on the device linked in the OP, or another device which may suit me better.

Also, when you guys say building my own and using the software available online, what extra features am I looking at that will be available to me, and are note worthy?
