So what's so good about SSDs?

I know all the technical perks, but I do not know the whys. Why use it for the OS? How can it make your computer faster? I think Intel specifically has something for SSDs?

I am just curious and I am not looking to buy one now.

If you upgrade CPU, RAM , GPU to make the computer faster you might feel maybe 30% improvement going form a Slow $50 CPU to $500 CPU in everyday task. Going from HDD to SSD you get like 500% improvement. HDD has been the bottleneck on PCs ever since they came out.

Um...

No moving parts, low power consumption, ability to saturate SATA2 connections, etc.

Zero millisecond access times is the big reason. That, and random read speeds an order of magnitude faster than spinning drives, which are the two things you most notice when you have disk access.

SSDs are used for the OS because it can load OS's much fast than a tradition hard drive. I get 15 sec boot time with my Crucial M4, something you will not find with a HDD. It makes your computer faster because it has faster read and write times(because there is no moving parts, etc.). for example, the Crucial m4 has sequential read of up to 500MB/s and a write up to 175MB/s. the sequential read allows for relative instantaneous response in opening programs and processing files. whenever you have the money for an SSD, I highly recommend it

You really won't realize what you are missing until you have one. Then, like everyone will say, it's very hard to go back. A pc that you think is fast will seem to crawl with most tasks once you return to it. That and the prices are affordable now, so for a boot/programs drive it's a no brainer compared to the asking price for the spinners.

The "bottleneck" in things that require heavy HDD use.
