Gelid fans annoying click

Thread Starter
Het guys,

I just bout 2 gelid wing 120mm fans. I have them plugged in to the fan controller in my case (NZXT Phantom) whenever I lower the notch of the fan controller so it is under 12 volts, it starts clicking, the lower the voltage on the controller the slower the click. It is really annoying and I can really undervolt my fans when I am not doing anything intensive and I dont to have them at 12 volts all the time.

I tried removing the impeller (fan blades) and it still makes the clicking sound.

It is a PWM fan and do you think if I get a PWM controller it will solve the problem

Thanks

Wait...you did what to the fan?

I can almost guarantee a PWM controller won't fix the issue.

Plug it into a mobo header and adjust the fan speed with Speedfan or something. Then report back if the issue still occurs or not.

Actually I suspect it's an issue with the fan's compatibility with fan controllers, not with the controller itself, like with the Corsair series fans.

Some fans make these sounds when they are undervolted. It has to do with how the fan controller regulates the voltage to the fan motor. Run them at full speed and not through the fan controller and Im sure itll go away. I returned my NZXT Sentry 2 back to Frys a while back because of this.

Also just like the well know issue with NZXT' fan controllers which is why i said i bet its the controller....because thats what it is wink.gif
The fan is fine, the controller is not.

The problem is the method NZXT use to control the fans, their controllers are NOT compatible with all fans and until recent they even had a sticky thread detailing all "compatible" fans, this thread was on their own forum but now has mysteriously disappeared as if they have gone into denial about this fault/problem and deleted the evidence, what i say about this sticky thread and the fault was taken down but is still cached in google search engine so reference to this can still be found upon a simple google search thumb.gif

Q:

My NZXT Sentry 2 is causing my fan(s) to produce a rattle noice. What is currently the problem?

A: This is a due to a compatibility issue. The following link will lead to a forum thread that will list some fans that have these conflict.

Precisely, i just had to RMA mine too because of this design fault/flaw.
I had to pay to return this item and it cost me 33% of the controllers RRP, this cost should not have been paid by myself as this is due to a desing flaw that is WELL know and previously admitted by NZXT themselves.

Had this been an item simply failing or breaking then its a straight forward RMA and i know i am obliged to cover cost of returning....but this was due to design fault, the fan controllers should really have been recalled imo but hey...they chugged on without giving a damn and continue to churn out the same crap, least they could have done was paid postage rolleyes.gif

Dont get me wrong, i do like the NZXT Sentry 2, its screen works very very well and its exactly what i was looking for but....i run my fans low and i could clearly hear this "Noise" and when i recently moved my PC into bedroom so its a bit annoying at night when you can hear this "noise" from your fans.

Maybe some of their others are fine but i kid you not, take 30 mins on the internet searching about NZXT fan controller issues...you will see im not talking waffle tongue.gif

Anyway ive taken to just running them all off a 7v reducer cable i made and sleeved myself, just for the moment until i get my controller back from RMA, fans are near silent now thumb.gif

This is why I swore off fan controllers long ago. You should measure the output of your fan controller. If it varies the Voltage, well and good. But some controllers pulse the 12v current, kind of a PWM control but not the official PWM control, which comes through the 5v fourth wire.

To test fans for clicking I run them at 12 Volts and at 5 Volts, both of which I can get directly from my PSU.

That said, most PWM fans click. This is why Noctua waited so long to release theirs: they had to overcome the PWM clicking.

*snip*
I don't need to search tongue.gif I already own an NZXT Sentry Mix and had this issue with an AF120 I was trying out. Eventually I found out it was because I used it with a fan controller. I've since taken out the controller and just bought a few 3 pin y splitters.
So they're actually fixing the controllers if you RMA them?

To test fans for clicking I run them at 12 Volts and at 5 Volts, both of which I can get directly from my PSU.

That said, most PWM fans click. This is why Noctua waited so long to release theirs: they had to overcome the PWM clicking.

Out of curiosity, is there any list of what PWM fans do and don't click?
