Question on motherboard slots

im not sure if this goes here or not. sorry if it doesnt. didnt seem to see a "motherboard" forum.

will a PCI express X1 fit into a X8 or X16 PCI slot? i mean, im sure it will fit, but does it run correctly?

It definitely will. It's going backwards that is sometimes questionable, like cutting the slot on a X1 and fitting a X16 card in there. Sure it works sometime, although with limited bandwidth. Should you try it...guess it depends on how risky you are. But yes, a X1 (small connector) will totally work. Just make sure it's not a PCI. PciE only!

The other way round you're fine. I was running a Xonar Essence PCIE x1 in a x8 slot without issues.
